Keanu Reeves Reveals The Fate Of John Wick 5
Although it has been greenlit, Keanu Reeves says he and Chad Stahelski are holding off on production of John Wick 5 for now.
Despite John Wick 5 having been greenlit in August 2020, Keanu Reeves says that he and the rest of the film’s team are playing it safe before they start working on the movie, according to MovieWeb. While the lead actor of the franchise fought hard with distributors to get a sequel to another of his action films, Constantine, despite it receiving mixed reviews from audiences, Reeves is waiting to see how John Wick 4 performs in theaters before thinking about the next chapter in the franchise.
Over the last nine years, the John Wick series has grown from a moderately successful first film into a major blockbuster franchise earning more than $86 million worldwide. While it’s not nearly as big as The Matrix, which has earned more than $427 million over the past 24 years, John Wick has become just as synonymous with Keanu Reeves as Neo has. With the franchise’s ever-growing popularity and the already greenlit fifth film, it seemed like a no-brainer that John Wick 5 would be made to conclude the series.
However, after expectations for the fourth and fifth films to be shot back to back were canceled, fans began to wonder if a fifth film was still in the works. It seems that the answer is maybe. While Keanu Reeves is interested in making a fifth film if audiences like the fourth movie, the film’s director, Chad Stahelski, is in need of a break.
When asked to share his thoughts on John Wick 5, Stahelski echoed Keanu Reeve’s sentiments and said to ask him again in a few months after John Wick 4 has been finished and released. Stahelski, who is known for stunt coordination and was Reeve’s stunt double in The Matrix, has directed all four John Wick movies.
John Wick 4 stars Keanu Reeves as the titular character. The film follows John Wick as he faces a new enemy whilst attempting to defeat The High Table. The script for the fourth film was penned by Shay Hatten, who also worked on the screenplay for John Wick 3, and Michael Finch, who is known for writing the action-thriller American Assassin (2017).
Alongside Keanu Reeves, the film stars Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Hiroyuki Sanada, Lance Reddick, Scott Adkins, Clancy Brown, Shamier Anderson, George Georgiou, and Rina Sawayama.
Whether or not John Wick’s saga will end with the fourth film or if a fifth film will be made, Keanu Reeves will still reprise his role in the upcoming spin-off starring Ana de Armas. Armas, who most recently stirred headlines for her controversial portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, will play a young female assassin in the John Wick spin-off Ballerina.
Ballerina is one of two current John Wick spin-offs in the works. The second one is a television miniseries for Amazon Prime called The Continental. Unlike the other John Wick films, The Continental will not feature Keanu Reeves as the titular character. Instead, the series will star Collin Woodell as a young Winston Scott, Peter Greene as a young Uncle Charlie, and Mel Gibson as a new character named Cormac.
