See Keanu Reeves’ New Look For Constantine Sequel
Fan art depicts Keanu Reeves in a more traditional John Constantine look.
Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2 was perhaps one of the most unexpected, yet welcome, sequel announcements in recent memory. New developments on the DC film have been slow to come out, but that doesn’t mean fans aren’t getting hyped. This also means there’s plenty of awesome fan art out there, which you can check out below on Instagram user Mizuri’s post:
Keanu Reeves looks as cool as ever as the occult expert and exorcist John Constantine. The classic collared shirt and tie combined with a leather jacket is the quintessential look for the character. Of course, he also casually has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth.
Keanu Reeves first played the titular character in 2005’s Constantine, which was directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello. The film had a great cast too, which includes Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, and Peter Stormare. It also pulled in a respectable box office pull with $230.9 million globally, against a production budget of $70–100 million.
While reviews of the film were initially mixed, fans came around to the movie as the years passed. Many loved Keanu Reeves as Constantine and people especially loved Peter Stormare’s perfect performance as Satan/Lucifer. If they can bring back the best elements of the original and make the story a little more even, the sequel could easily be better than the first movie.
Obviously, Keanu Reeves is set to return in the lead role for Constantine 2. Francis Lawrence will also be back to direct the sequel, while Akiva Goldsman is brought on for the screenplay. Goldsman is also on board to produce along with J.J. Abrams and Hanna Minghella.
As for when we can finally expect to see Keanu Reeves in Constantine 2, those waters are much murkier. The major shifts over at Warner Bros Discovery led to content being cut, projects being shelved, and many other radical changes. The Constantine sequel was lucky to make it through these changes without being canceled completely.
While the reports say that Keanu Reeves Constantine is still in development, it might be a while before we can get a glimpse of it. James Gunn and Peter Safran are ready to kick off their DCU and adding too many tertiary projects to the release slate might not be high on their list of priorities. Undoubtedly, this sequel will be part of the DC Elseworlds banner rather than a part of the main DCU continuity.
For those not tuned into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s grand plans, DC Elseworlds will be in the category of films like Matt Reeves’ Batman sequels and the Joaquin Phoenix Joker films. In other words, it allows DC films to be made that aren’t tied to the characters and the storyline of the DCU proper. While it’s not entirely impossible that Keanu Reeves’ Constantine will be folded into the DCU, it doesn’t seem likely.
In any case, we might just have to keep admiring fan art until we can get some more solid developments on Keanu Reeves’ Constantine 2. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more about this film. In the meantime, you can see the next DC film The Flash in theaters on June 23.
