Instagram artist @spdrmnkyxxiii created a fan poster for Constantine 2, and it makes us wonder if the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 film will ever materialize. Though it has been reported in the past that Keanu Reeves will be attached to the DC property, we’re only now getting the updates that we want to hear. But we’re going to have to wait a little longer for a definitive update because even though Reeves has met with James Gunn, the script for the film has yet to be written.
The important takeaway is that Keanu Reeves is, in fact, going to reprise his role of cynical occult expert John Constantine. Constantine 2 will fall under the Elseworlds umbrella, which makes it a DC property, but won’t be set in the DCU’s regular canon.

If the fan-made poster is any indication of what’s to come, we should be excited that we’ll be presented with a brand new movie that further explores the harrowing story of a man who can travel between Earth and the depths of hell and see half-demons for the insidious creatures that they truly are.
Just like The Batman Part II, and Joker: Folie à Deux, Constantine 2 will be held to a higher standard of quality under the Elseworlds umbrella because it will focus on building out its own lore rather than riffing on the canon that the DC Universe will establish with its upcoming 2025 reboot on the cinematic front.
As of this writing, we don’t exactly where Constantine 2 will pick up, or what timeline it will find itself working through.
In other words, this Keanu Reeves movie will function as a standalone film that follows its own rules, which will give it the opportunity to take on a life of its own and explore new territory.
As for further developments, the ongoing WGA strike has put a damper on the writing and production of Constantine 2, and it’s going to be a while before we get to see Keanu Reeves reprise the role of the titular character from the first film. In regard to continuity, we don’t have a lot of information to work with. Though John Constantine was terminally ill with lung cancer in the 2005 film, if he’s alive and well in the sequel, then that raises a number of questions.
As of this writing, we don’t exactly where Constantine 2 will pick up, or what timeline it will find itself working through. It’s been 18 years since Keanu Reeves worked under Francis Lawrence’s direction on the first film, and it remains to be seen if the sequel will take place 18 years later as well, or on a separate timeline (or plane of existence) entirely.
The entire film industry is facing uncertainty with the ongoing strikes, but it’s great to know that Keanu Reeves, writer Akiva Goldsman, and director Francis Lawrence are ready to hit the ground running with Constantine 2 as soon as the opportunity presents itself. For the time being, we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for further updates, and enjoy the art that’s being generated as eager fans wait patiently for the upcoming, and long-awaited sequel.
