Katie Holmes Has Insane Rules About Her Latest Production

Katie Holmes's Off-Broadway play The Wanderers has strict timing rules down to the minute.

Batman Begins star Katie Holmes recently gave an interview with Variety where she revealed the strict timing of her latest Off-Broadway play The Wanderers. According to Holmes, her director Barry Edelstein has a very particular idea of how long the play should run, saying, “‘The play works at one hour and 37 minutes or one hour and 38 minutes. If you hop up to one hour and 40 minutes, then you aren’t faster than the audience. Your thoughts have to be faster than the audience.’” Her director clearly cares a lot about the cadence and rhythm of the play, which Holmes herself is likely putting to good use in her own upcoming feature.

Katie Holmes is no stranger to directing at this point, with two features, a short, and an episode of a TV mini-series under her belt. Her upcoming third feature Rare Objects has been in production since 2016 and will finally be coming to select theaters and on-demand services on April 13. The film follows a girl named Benita (Julia Mayorga) who works at an antique shop after experiencing a traumatic event.

Katie Holmes also stars in the film, playing a woman named Diana who forms an unlikely friendship with Benita after they both stay at the same mental health facility. Holmes also co-wrote the screenplay with Phaedon A. Papadopoulos based on the novel by Kathleen Tessaro. Of course, Holmes is also playing quadruple duty in this film as she’s also producing.

The last time we saw a major project from Katie Holmes was last year, when she released her second directorial effort, Alone Together. Holmes also wrote and starred in the film alongside Jim Sturgess, Derek Luke, Melissa Leo, Zosia Mamet, and Becky Ann Baker. It has been interesting to see Holmes make the pivot from major blockbuster star to indie director, writer, and producer.

It’s a pivot that seems to be working well for Katie Holmes. While Holmes is best known for her roles in hits like Dawson’s Creek and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, she seems to be thriving with the quieter (but no less busy) career direction she’s currently in. If the long-gestating film Rare Objects gets critical attention, there will surely be more directorial efforts from Holmes in the future.

Meanwhile, it seems like Holmes’ daughter Suri Cruise is now watching the role that helped her mother break out into Hollywood, as Katie Holmes revealed in the interview that she started watching Dawson’s Creek during the pandemic. Holmes also collaborated with her daughter in Alone Together by recruiting her to sing a cover of “Blue Moon” by Frank Sinatra. It seems like talent definitely runs in the family, as Suri’s father, Tom Cruise, continues to create massive Hollywood blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick and the upcoming Mission: Impossible films.

If you can’t wait to see Katie Holmes in her upcoming Rare Objects film, you can catch her in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of The Wanderers at the Laura Pels Theatre in New York. The play is now in its final week and will end its run on April 2, with tickets still available for several shows. Hopefully, you’ll see a production that lasts one hour and 37 minutes instead of one that lasts one hour and 40 minutes.
