Kathy Bates is an incredible acting talent who made a huge name for herself portraying the terrifying character of Annie Wilkes in Stephen King’s Misery. She was so compelling in that role that it won her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Many fans have hoped that she could return to such a prominent and imposing role at some point in her career. While she has had some memorable turns on recent seasons of American Horror Story, a new piece of investigating has led to the possibility that she is going to play one of the most powerful DC supervillains of all time.
Twitter user DC Brasil did some digging and found that the Twitter account for the New Gods film originally followed only seven other accounts. One of those happened to be the official account for Kathy Bates, as well as the film’s director Ava DuVernay and the film’s writer Tom King. This has led to speculation that Bates is up for the role of Granny Goodness, a pivotal character in the New Gods canon.
So who is Granny Goodness and why would Kathy Bates be perfect casting for her? Granny Goodness is often portrayed as one of Darkseid‘s closest and strongest allies. She is responsible for training cadets for Darkseid’s armies, as well as being the commander of the Female Furies, the most elite warriors in all of Apokolips. In some instances, she is also portrayed as the controller of the Parademons that make up most of Darkseid’s invading force. She is also incredibly powerful, possessing superhuman strength, stamina, reflexes, and invulnerability.
Basically, Granny Goodness is the kind of character that could feasibly go toe-to-toe with the likes of Superman. And the thought of seeing such a character brought to the big screen sounds absolutely wacky. That’s why an actor of Kathy Bates’ caliber would be vital in getting audiences on board with such a wild character like Granny Goodness. There is no question that seeing a superpowered old lady is outrageous, but if the movie was able to snag Kathy Bates for it, audiences might be able to vibe with seeing an Oscar-winning actress embody such a ludicrous role.
Unfortunately, we have not heard a whole lot about Ava DuVernay’s New Gods for a while. Writer Tom King was announced which was a huge plus for fans of his comic book work like The Vision and Mister Miracle – he is currently writing the Rorschach series for DC – but not much else has happened with the film since then. We have been hoping to hear casting announcements so that the movie would sound like it is moving forward, so this rumor about Kathy Bates possibly being attached to New Gods is some much needed good news.
We will have to wait and see what comes up regarding New Gods and Kathy Bates as Granny Goodness. It is pitch-perfect casting of the highest order and hopefully signals that the movie is still in active development. There are a lot of irons in the DC fire right now. Hopefully, New Gods can continue to burn bright.
