Kate Winslet may never have been in a movie with Tom Cruise, but she thinks the actor may be a little sick of hearing her name right now. Movieweb explains that the Titanic star’s record-breaking underwater work for Avatar: The Way of Water supplanted that of the Top Gun icon, as she held her breath while submerged for seven minutes and 14 seconds. He previously held the record at six minutes, which he earned while training for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

Since these are both remarkable records, Kate Winslet fears that the media may be pestering Tom Cruise about her shattering his, especially since Avatar: The Way of Water has seen a surge of media exposure in the weeks after its record-breaking release date. The actress plays Ronal in the James Cameron sequel, a character who is the rival to Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri, and a strong woman who does what she has to in order to protect her family. Among the many stories that emerged from its production was the news of Kate Winslet’s remarkable feat.

Speaking about how inundated Kate Winslet thinks Tom Cruise might be by reports of her accomplishment, she said, “Poor Tom. I mean, I don’t know Tom at all – I’ve never met him in my life – but I’m sure he’s getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record. I loved it, though. … I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better.”

The competition between Kate Winslet and Tom Cruise doesn’t end there. Avatar: The Way of Water is also most likely going to crush the record set by Top Gun: Maverick earlier this year as audiences head into New Years’ weekend. The fighter pilot blockbuster had an international gross of $770 million, and as of Friday, December 30 the chronicle of the planet Pandora had already earned over $1 billion internationally.

The numbers for Avatar: The Way of Water are a relief from early rumors that the movie wasn’t grossing as much as hoped for, and is also good news for future Avatar sequels, which were dependent on this movie’s performance at the box office. James Cameron has several sequels planned and even wrote entire scripts whose only purpose was to provide character background rather than to be turned into movies. It remains to be seen if Kate Winslet will return in a sequel, or if she will break another Tom Cruise record.

Kate Winslet’s concern for Tom Cruise is also a touching display of professional acknowledgment, even if she said it with tongue-in-cheek humor. Whether Kate Winslet’s name is actually annoying Tom Cruise or not, her breaking his record does not diminish it. Most people can’t hold their breath underwater for six minutes, and Tom Cruise accomplished this feat at the ripe age of 53.

For the Avatar actress to surpass the record is still incredible in its own right and she deserves the acclaim she is receiving in the media, no matter how he might feel about it. Still, either Kate Winslet and Tom Cruise are superhuman, or the rest of us have a lot of catching up to do!
