Kate Winslet Opens Up About The Future Of Her Best Series
Kate Winslet's Mare of Easttown had a record-setting first season, but since then, no official word has come out about a second season, until now, when the star breaks her silence.
Fans of the limited series starring Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown, have speculated about a second season since the first concluded. But, according to AV Club, the Titanic star says there is no plan for a second season right now and that the creative team has no clear vision for moving forward. HBO series creator Brad Ingelsby has teased ideas for another installment, but nothing has been set in stone.
In Mare of Easttown, Winslet plays a detective whose success in high school basketball earned her a reputation as a local legend. The character, Marianne Sheehan, struggles to solve the murder of a teenage mother while balancing the struggles in her personal life.
For Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown is her most successful series. It’s one of only two titles in HBO’s 50-year history to earn higher ratings with each episode. In addition, the series finale is the most-watched episode of original programming on HBO Max.
In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Winslet said it was unclear how a second season of the series would evolve, saying “How would it evolve? It was all so good and it was way more successful and prominent as a piece of television than I think any of us could have anticipated or hoped for, and we all feel enormously proud of what we were able to do.” The show’s creators didn’t anticipate its success, and the pressure to live up to the first season hangs over the series. The next installment of the story would also be complicated for its star.
Kate Winslet on a second season for Mare of Easttown, “How would it evolve? It was all so good and it was way more successful and prominent as a piece of television than I think any of us could have anticipated or hoped for, and we all feel enormously proud of what we were able to do.”
For a dedicated actor like Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown is challenging. Her character, Mare, experienced deep trauma in the first season. Winslet would have to incorporate those experiences into her portrayal of the detective in the following seasons.
Portraying a troubled character is exhausting and can take a toll on actors. Kate Winslet acknowledged the Mare of Easttown role was challenging, saying “It was a lot for me to play that character, I’m not going to lie. Coming out the other side was frighteningly hard. It made me realize, ‘Oh my god, if I go to work now, it really hurts,’ and I have to look after myself. I have a family. I can’t just do that.”
After the success of Mare of Easttown, Kate began filming another limited HBO max series. For the streaming platform. The new show is a screen adaptation of the Hernan Diaz novel Trust. Diaz helped create, along with Kate Winslet, Mare of Easttown. The two also collaborated on the 2011 miniseries, Mildred Pierce.
Diaz and Winslet are a winning team, as both Mildred Pierce and Mare of Easttown have won multiple Emmys. In addition, Winslet won awards for both titles. Trust could follow this trend and be another award-winning production the two have worked on together.
With no clear framework for a second series, fans desperate for more KateWinslet Mare of Easttown thrills will have to look forward to Trust. The novel is a thrilling mystery full of intrigue, rumors, and twists that delves into the sordid pasts of two wealthy New Yorkers in the 1930s.
If the series Trust is anything like the novel, the audience will be left holding their breath at the edge of their seats. Unfortunately, until a second season of Mare of Easttown is announced, fans desperate for more murder and mystery will have to find it in this period piece about wealth and power.
