Ever since Paramount+ debuted the Star Trek: The Next Generation spinoff Star Trek: Picard, fans have wondered if other franchise favorites might also get to lead their own series. Now, Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew revealed that it might be a possibility for her character, Admiral Kathryn Janeway. The actress talked about it during the 56-Year Mission Las Vegas convention. When asked if there had been any talks of doing a “Star Trek: Janeway”, gesturing toward the crowd she said, “Very simply, that’s up to you.”
Elaborating on the prospective project, Kate Mulgrew continued via CBR, “There are talks, you know? There are conversations.” While the possibility of a new Trek spinoff might be exciting, the actress noted that she hasn’t been offered anything directly. She explained that Paramount will probably base their decision on the value and reaction to Picard. “I’m sure all of you loved it, didn’t you? I don’t know what they’re thinking, but I think that Janeway was one of a kind,” she said at the popular Trek event. You can watch Kate Mulgrew at the Las Vegas convention below:
Fans were first introduced to Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager‘s premiere episode, “Caretaker.” She was the Captain of the Starfleet starship USS Voyager while it was lost in the Delta Quadrant. Portrayed by Kate Mulgrew, the character went on to headline the show for its entire seven-season run. After returning home, she was promoted to Vice-Admiral and briefly appeared in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis. While other female Captains had appeared in several Trek episodes, Janeway was the first one to serve as the central character of a live-action television series.
Interestingly, Kate Mulgrew is currently reprising her role as Admiral Kathryn Janeway in the Nickelodeon and Paramount+ Star Trek: Prodigy animated series. The story is set in 2383, five years after the USS Voyager returned to Earth at the end of Voyager. That’s when a crew of young aliens finds an abandoned Starfleet ship in the Tars Lamora prison colony. Taking control of the vessel, they must learn to work together as they make their way from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant.
The Orange is the New Black star said she was skeptical about taking the Prodigy job when approached by executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “I have to tell you that I was a little bit uncertain at first,” Kate Mulgrew said via the New York Post. “After all, I had played her for seven years in heels. I had invested every scintilla of my being in that woman. And I thought, ‘An animated version of Janeway? I don’t know. I don’t know.’” Following the success of the first 10-episode season in 2021, Star Trek: Prodigy was renewed for a second outing which is currently in production.
While no official news of a “Star Trek: Janeway” series has been announced, Kathryn Janeway has also been featured in other media like books and video games. In just about every appearance that at least requires voice acting, the Captain is portrayed by Kate Mulgrew who got the role after original choice Geneviève Bujold left Voyager after only two days of filming.
