Kate Mulgrew Is Right About Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3

Star Trek: Prodigy, the animated Star Trek series created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, was officially canceled last year by Paramount+, presumably due to Paramount’s ever-increasing debt. Fortunately, Netflix picked up the series and launched a rather successful second season less than a month ago, and now, actress Kate Mulgrew holds out hope that Netflix decides to produce Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3.

Kate Mulgrew And Star Trek

Coming fresh from the stage and the full auditorium of the San Diego Comic-Con, actress Kate Mulgrew, who portrays Captain/Admiral Kathryn Janeway in the Star Trek universe, expressed her hope that Netflix would continue the series. Sadly, SDCC ended without a Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 announcement, leaving many fans questioning the future of the previously canceled show. It’s nothing short of odd, considering that the series’ second season on Netflix was more successful than the first season produced by Paramount.

Kat Mulgrew expressed her admiration for the franchise and explained to fans in attendance she feels “There will never be a saturation point, because there is never a saturation point for this kind of decency, this kind of excitement. This message is good, and it’s profoundly important. This is truly what we aspire to be, the best of ourselves.”

Appreciation For Fans

Kate Mulgrew also mentioned the aerial banner that the fans paid for to fly over Netflix and other streamers when the series was canceled by Paramount while also praising the unquestionable superiority of the series. She didn’t compare the series against any of the previous releases that didn’t fare well with the company due to Paramount’s experimentation with the IP, but we can all agree that Discovery was a dud, despite giving us Strange New Worlds and the upcoming Section 31 movie. But what does all of this mean for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3?

The Amazing Second Season

Sadly, it doesn’t mean much. While Kate Mulgrew is right, and Star Trek: Prodigy is a superior TV show loved by the entire fandom—with many calling the most recent season quintessential Star Trek—the fate of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3 lies in Netflix’s hands.

Sure, the second season of the series was nothing short of spectacular, and the series’ creators, Kevin and Dan Hageman, did an exceptional job by setting up the second season finale as a series finale that still leaves an open door to continuation. And that’s what both the cast and the fans want.

Up To Netflix

The question is whether or not Netflix can and wants to continue the series further. Paramount has always been the home of the Star Trek franchise and has a long-established vision and understanding of the franchise’s universe and ethos.

Bringing in a new production company implies different perspectives that could later affect the feel and direction of the series or even the franchise as a whole. However, Netflix disputed such viewpoints, showing that it’s capable of doing a better job, which is why Kate Mulgrew and the fans are calling on the streamer to produce Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3

In the end, it’s all about earnings; there’s no doubt that Season 2 made Netflix a lot of money, so there’s really no other reason but legal for Netflix to back down from making Star Trek: Prodigy Season 3.

Sadly, no one has said a word about it; Kate Mulgrew expressed heartache over a potential discontinuation of the series, and fans are now preparing to fund yet another aerial banner over Netflix and other streamers. If they cancel Prodigy, we riot.
