Kathryn Janeway is a character that Star Trek fans have been eager to see return to the franchise. After closing out her tenure on Star Trek: Voyager and popping up for a brief cameo in Star Trek: Nemesis, the first female captain of the franchise has been out of the picture. Well, that is about to change.
As reported by the official Star Trek Twitter account, Kathryn Janeway will be back in action as a character in the upcoming Nickelodeon animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy. You can check out the announcement in the tweet right here:
Kate Mulgrew, the actress that helped bring the iconic Captain Kathryn Janeway to life, made the announcement at the end of the Star Trek Universe virtual panel at New York Comic-Con. It was very clear that Mulgrew was excited to return to the character after close to twenty years. “I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy,” said Mulgrew. “How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”
It is going to be very interesting seeing how Captain Kathryn Janeway is integrated into the plot of Star Trek: Prodigy. As we have reported before, Star Trek: Prodigy will be a computer-animated series on Nickelodeon that will focus on “a group of lawless teens (presumably outside Federation space though they haven’t specified yet) who find a derelict Starfleet ship. They use it to set off on an adventure in search of meaning and salvation.”
So, will Captain Kathryn Janeway be aboard this ship in some fashion? Our current hypothesis is that she will be communicating with the kids aboard the abandoned ship. Could she be a hologram that is part of the ship’s programming? Or will it be the real Janeway and she is beaming in missions or messages for the brave new crew? Even more exciting is the prospect that she could show up in person on the bridge of a brand new starship.
It certainly sounds like Captain Kathryn Janeway will be a recurring character on Star Trek: Prodigy, so we will just have to wait and see exactly how she fulfills that role. Nonetheless, it is worth getting excited about her return to the Star Trek universe. The character was given a good sendoff in the finale of Star Trek: Voyager, but we are also of the mind that there is some room for improvement when it comes to giving us another way for the character’s story to play out.
The Star Trek universe is certainly giving fans the characters they love to see, and things are starting to look up for the future of the franchise. If Star Trek: Prodigy is even half as good as Star Trek: Lower Decks, we could see the real renaissance of the series taking place in animation. No matter what, we just can’t wait to see Captain Kathryn Janeway back in the saddle again.
