Karl Urban is currently enjoying massive success as Billy Butcher for the Amazon Prime Video adaptation of The Boys. However, long before he was cast in that show, he was also part of another huge comic book adaptation. Urban once portrayed Judge Dredd in arguably one of the best adaptations ever made. The original Judge Dredd film that starred Sylvester Stallone was released in 1995. However, though it was a valiant effort, it wasn’t all that great. However, Urban stepped in for the reboot in 2012, and that film was really where the comic book accuracy was felt more deeply. The actor was recently interviewed about his involvement in the upcoming TV series, and he all but coyly responded to the question.

According to Karl Urban, “Regardless of whether or not I’m involved with it, I think it’s such a wonderful property. John Wagner and his entire staff of writers and illustrators have created so many wonderful stories that I, personally, as a fan of Dredd, would love to see. I can’t wait to see what they do with it.” The man is throwing out his support for the new TV series, but he is oddly ignoring the base of the question. Regardless of whether he is involved or not doesn’t quite sound like he is saying he hasn’t been asked to appear in the series. He also says he can’t wait to see what they do with it. That is us too, but it could mean he also can’t wait to see if they call him to star in the series. He is having huge success on The Boys and that could lead to him jumping ship for a new Dredd series. Just saying.

Judge Dredd was created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra. Alex Garland penned the screenplay for the 2012 remake of the film. Some of his work includes Ex-Machina, 28 Days Later, and Never Let Me Go. It appears as if John Wagner will be returning for the new series, though there have been no further details about casting. Karl Urban is just alluding to being a fan of Wagner’s work and the stories that he has cultivated with his team. However, it could also mean that Urban wants his chance to reprise one of his iconic characters. He was so good in the reboot that he didn’t even need to show his face at all throughout the entire movie. That’s what kind of actor the man is.

The new series will be titled Judge Dredd: Mega-City One and has all been a joint effort by fans and endorsed by 2000 AD, which is John Wagner’s company. Though the series has been talked about for years, there has been no further mention of adding Karl Urban to the mix. There had been some talks initially, but those seemed to fizzle out and left the project without a star. At least, that is how it seems right now.

Karl Urban played a fantastic Judge Dredd, and the hope is that this new series will involve the man. As previously mentioned, he is fantastic in The Boys. This could lead to him garnering more attention for leading roles in television shows. Urban returning to portray Dredd would be incredible. The man is perfect for the role, as was the indication from the 2012 film that became a cult classic. Make this happen.
