Karen Gillan Reveals Pregnancy With First Baby

Karen Gillan

Karen Gillan shot to fame on Doctor Who, a show whose timey-wimey plot had her eventually giving birth to the Doctor’s future wife. Her character’s pregnancy and subsequent birth became major plot points in this sci-fi show, but now it looks like she is pregnant in real life. At the red carpet premiere of her movie The Life of Chuck, she showed off her adorable baby bump.

The Reveal

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Karen Gillan dazzled the world with a canary yellow dress and half-cape that were both way too stylish to ever be in the TARDIS closet.

With any of her other film premieres, everybody would mostly focus on how good she looks in the dress. But while the Doctor Who star does look amazing (as always), the fan and media focus has understandably been centered on the surprise pregnancy reveal.

Karen & Nick

Perhaps it shouldn’t be that much of a surprise, though. After all, she secretly married Nick Kocher in May 2022, though the world didn’t know about it until they spilled the details on social media last year.

These two are no strangers to keeping romantic secrets, and the revelation of this pregnancy is par for the course of a couple that loves to surprise us.

Incidentally, the story of how these two actually met and got together has more twists and turns than an average episode of Doctor Who. Karen Gillan first met Kocher because of her “recommended friends list on Instagram.”

Later, she praised the “algorithm” for helping bring them together, but it took multiple attempts (and multiple apps) before these two could physically meet and ultimately tie the knot.

Dating

Apparently liking what she saw on Instagram, Karen Gillan sent Kocher a message via the app. After he initially ignored it, she tracked him down on X (formerly known as Twitter) and shot him a DM that was short and to the point: “Hi, your tweets are really funny. I’m Karen, by the way.’”

Later, Karen Gillan admitted that the first part of that DM was a white lie because she “hadn’t really read his tweets.” This was obviously flattering for Kocher, as a major Hollywood star fell for him more or less based on looks alone.

Once they started dating, though, she would playfully put him in his place in a way that sounds a lot like her Amy character from Doctor Who.

Down Low

After admitting that she went “in for the kill” on this relationship, Karen Gillan revealed that she would tease Kocher, saying, ‘Wait, I missed the part where I get kissed, so you’re gonna need to put some work in now.”

This was a teasing way of pointing out that she had made the first movie and now expected some razzle dazzle from her partner. Since getting married, the two have made all their moves together but often kept things on the down low, with Kocher mostly keeping his head down outside of attending the occasional film premiere.

The Life Of Chuck

Speaking of premieres, Karen Gillan’s recently-premiered The Life of Chuck adapts a Stephen King novella, and the prolific horror author has already praised the film as “one of the good ones.”

It comes to us courtesy of Mike Flanagan, one of modern horror’s best directors and showrunners. As for Gillan, here’s hoping that she finds motherhood far less scary than her most recent film.
