Karate Kid Sequel Bringing Back Two Enormous Stars But One Thing Is Missing
Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are returning to star in a sequel to The Karate Kid. The only problem is they’re missing the titular kid, so the two stars posted an open casting call to find the film’s star.
The video encourages anyone from around the globe to submit their best video and showcase their skills for a chance to star in the film.
Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan Looking In Karate Kid
Ralph Maccio, of course, is the original The Karate Kid who starred in the 1984 film, while Jackie Chan made his first appearance in the franchise in the 2010 reboot.
Now, the two will be brought together for this epic upcoming film, which currently has its plot details under wraps.
Revived As A Film Franchise
However, Indie Wire does point out that the film is shooting for a December 13, 2024, release date and that Jonathan Entwistle (I Am Not Okay With This) is directing the film from a screenplay by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit) with Karen Rosenfelt on board as producer.
It’s not surprising that The Karate Kid is being revived as a film franchise, with the film series grossing over $430 million globally and the Emmy-nominated sequel series Cobra Kai being a wildly popular hit for Netflix.
Ralph Macchio Back In Cobra Kai
Ralph Macchio also reprised his role as Daniel LaRusso for that series, which focuses on William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence as he reopens the Cobra Kai dojo.
The series also has a hugely talented ensemble that includes Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Mariduena, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Gianni DeCenzo, Peyton List, Vanessa Rubio, and Dallas Dupree Young, Martin Kove, and Thomas Ian Griffith.
Cobra Kai Is Ending
The upcoming sixth season of Cobra Kai is set to be the last season of the series, so it’s perfect timing for The Karate Kid film franchise to kick off again.
It will be interesting to see how they incorporate Macchio and Chan’s characters into the new film, which will presumably kick off some more sequels.
Jackie Chan In The Karate Kid
Chan played a Mr. Miyagi-like role in the 2010 reboot film as Mr. Han, a kung fu master and maintenance man who taught Jaden Smith’s character the art of kung fu.
Notably, the currently untitled 2024 The Karate Kid film is a major return for Jackie Chan to the Hollywood fold, as he has mostly stuck to making films in China since starring in the 2010 reboot.
He did work with John Cena on the film Hidden Strike, but even that was a co-production between America and China. Chan has always been a Hollywood action icon, and he even received an Honorary Oscar in 2016 for his contributions to Hollywood film history.
