Jurassic World Rebirth Shows Scarlett Johansson Enter The Franchise
The first images from Jurassic World Rebirth have been revealed, featuring the upcoming movie’s leading lady, Scarlett Johansson. As the franchise moves into its next phase, the focus on the actress seems to be setting her up to become the face of the franchise. With a plot that pulls back the global scale of the last movie and a new cast, the series seems to be reorienting itself.
A Small Reveal
The first look reveal was fairly minimal, with just a few still images and a release date accompanied by Jurassic World Rebirth’s logo reveal. The photos also showed off Jonathan Bailey alongside Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali in military uniform, holding a flare and seemingly screaming. The logo is a simple gold and black take on the iconic logo of the first movie.
The Start Of A New Era
Between Scarlett Johansson’s involvement and the franchise’s popularity, the Jurassic World Rebirth first look is generating a lot of buzz. The original Jurassic Park was a huge hit in 1993 and was considered a pioneer in special effects for its combination of computer-generated and practical effects. It was followed by a pair of sequels built around characters from the original cast, and then a new trilogy with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard resurrected the franchise in 2015.
An All-New Cast
While the main cast was revealed in the first look images released by Universal, some of the supporting cast of Jurassic World Rebirth has been announced but not shown. Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey will be joined by Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Ed Skrein. None of the established cast from previous movies have been announced, though a surprise appearance from someone like Chris Pratt or Jeff Goldblum could be kept under wraps to surprise audiences.
Getting Back To Basics
The plot of Jurassic World Rebirth seems to be a bit more toned down than the last two movies in the franchise. Like the original film, it will take place on an isolated island where many of the resurrected dinosaurs have retreated due to the modern climate being largely uninhabitable for them. Scarlett Johansson plays a secret ops expert tasked with going to the island to retrieve genetic samples from dinosaurs, a mission complicated by a civilian family being stranded on the dinosaur-filled island.
Arriving Next Year
Producer Frank Marshall has previously described Jurassic World Rebirth as “the start of a new era,” and the smaller plot and addition of new stars like Scarlett Johansson gives that feeling. The plot description, including an explanation that dinosaurs have retreated to the equatorial region, pulls back from the apocalyptic setting of Jurassic World Dominion. It’s also been stated that the new movie will strive to be less action-oriented than the previous films, with the original film’s writer, David Koepp, returning to write the script.
Buoyed by the star power of Scarlett Johansson, Jurassic World Rebirth seems like a guaranteed hit even when movies in general are struggling. The movie is still in production, with shooting scheduled to wrap up in October. Everyone’s favorite dinosaur sci-fi franchise is set to return on July 2nd, 2025.
