Julia Roberts Reveals The Actor That Completely Disgusted Her
Julia Roberts had a hard time working with Nick Nolte in I Love Trouble.
Being an actor, like any ordinary job, has its share of ups and downs. Some actors really hit it off with one another, while other performers absolutely despise their colleagues. For example, Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte notoriously butted heads during the making of the 1994 romantic comedy I Love Trouble, and according to Variety, the 55-year-old actress told The New York Times in 1993 that the Hulk star was “completely disgusting” on the set of the Charles Shyer-directed flick.
Julia Roberts was making the press rounds for the crime drama The Pelican Brief with Denzel Washington, when she told The New York Times that she and Nick Nolte gave each other grief from the moment they met. Although she indicated that Nolte could be extremely nice and semi-charming at times, she asserted he was also very disgusting. She went on to say that her I Love Trouble co-star seemed to make it a mission to repel people.
When asked by Insider about his on-set drama with Julia Roberts while promoting his film Rittenhouse Square, where he portrays a homeless Vietnam War veteran, Nick Nolte indicated that he’s never attempted to contact Roberts since production concluded on I Love Trouble. Still, he asserted that there’s no bad blood between the actors. He believes that he was partly responsible for the behind-the-scenes drama with Roberts, but he maintained some of the fault belongs to her.
I Love Trouble centers around Sabrina Peterson (Julia Roberts) and Peter Brackett (Nick Nolte), who are two competing Chicago newspaper reporters who are forced to partner up to unravel the mystery behind a train derailment. The film also stars Saul Rubinek, James Rebhorn, Robert Loggia, Kelly Rutherford, and Marsha Mason. Charles Shyer helmed the flick from a script he co-wrote with Nancy Meyers.
When I Love Trouble arrived in theaters June 29, 1994, the film was widely panned by critics. Unlike some movies that see a greater appreciation develop for them over time, Charles Shyer’s flick currently sits with a score of 22% on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes nearly two decades later. Critics blasted the generic storyline and the lack of onscreen chemistry between Julia Robert and Nick Nolte.
The romantic comedy earned nearly $8 million in its debut weekend, ending its box office run with approximately $31 million. Unfortunately, the budget was reportedly around $45 million, thus the film was ultimately considered to be a flop. Although the on-set feud between Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte didn’t directly impact the movie’s box office performance, it did affect the pair’s onscreen chemistry, which undoubtedly didn’t sit well with some viewers.
Fortunately, it sounds like there’s no longer a beef between the two stars, and both Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte have enjoyed successful careers in the years since I Love Trouble was released. At the moment, Roberts is lighting up the big screen in the romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise alongside George Clooney. Meanwhile, Nolte appears as a homeless veteran in the drama Rittenhouse Square, which is set to release later this year.
