Jujutsu Kaisen: The Sorcerer Killer, Toji Fushiguro, Explained

By Jason Collins | Updated

Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen will cover Gojo’s Past Arc from the manga, in which Toji Fushiguro plays a rather significant, antagonistic role. The hype up to the legendary battle between Gojo Satoru and the infamous Sorcerer Killer has been the fandom’s fixation ever since the announcement of Season 2. But who is the infamous Sorcerer Killer, and why is he so dangerous?

Due to his heavenly restriction, which we’ll explain later on, Toji became the Batman of Jujutsu Kaisen and started gaining popularity as an infamous bounty hunter.

Toji Fushiguro is one of the more prominent supporting characters of Jujutsu Kaisen, who appeared in the Hidden Inventory Arc in the manga. Some of the basic information surrounding the character includes the fact that he was born into the Zenin clan—which he renounced—and has adopted his wife’s last name, thus becoming known as Toji Fushiguro.

Due to his heavenly restriction, which we’ll explain later on, Toji became the Batman of Jujutsu Kaisen and started gaining popularity as an infamous bounty hunter.

Toji Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2

To understand what really made Toji so dangerous, you have to understand the character’s background. Everything in Jujutsu Kaisen has cursed energy, which, once accumulated through negative experiences and emotions, gives birth to curses—malevolent entities of the series.

Toji was born as a non-sorcerer, which means he had no cursed energy at all—a condition known as Heavenly Restriction.

Sorcerers have the ability to manipulate this energy into various jujutsu techniques, which they then use to combat curses. Toji was born into the elite Zenin clan, which, as one of the top three clans in Jujutsu society, values cursed techniques more than anything else.

Everything in Jujutsu Kaisen possesses cursed energy except Toji Fushiguro. Toji was born as a non-sorcerer, which means he had no cursed energy at all—a condition known as Heavenly Restriction. Due to the fact that he doesn’t possess any cursed energy, Toji is completely ostracized and even hated by the members of his clan. This hatred ran so deep that it led some clan members to abuse Toji since his early days. In fact, the Zenin clan locked him up in a pit of cursed spirits as disciplinary measures.

However, the Heavenly Restriction has its side effects. In exchange for cursed energy, Toji gained immense physical abilities, such as superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes, and enhanced senses, which were heightened to their absolute peak, allowing him to actually see curses and track sorcerers without having to rely on residual energy detection.

Not only that, but he also grew up to be a master weapon specialist and a superb tactician. Thanks to these abilities, he actually emerged as a rival to some of the strongest jujutsu sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen.

It’s up to fans to decide whether Toji is good or evil—for many of us, he’s an exceptionally fun character with a grudge against a Jujutsu Kaisen society that has done him wrong.

Due to the ostracization by his own clan and family members, Toji left the Zenin clan and began to loathe the immoral Jujutsu society that had mistreated him for being different. The Jujutsu Kaisen creator Gege Akutami, who actually favors Toji as a character, stated that Toji became psychologically unstable due to ill-treatment from his clan members, family, and the Jujutsu society.

The cumulative circumstances, paired with Toji’s peak physical abilities, intellect, and tactical prowess, made him into an absolute monster.

There’s plenty more to explore about Jujutsu Kaisen’s Toji Fushiguro, but we won’t dive any further to avoid any spoilers for those still waiting to meet him in the manga/anime. We will say that he’s a very prominent character in both Gojo’s Past and Shibuya Incident Arcs in both mediums, and his actions and decisions rippled throughout the narrative in several different ways.

With everything said, Toji is a morally ambiguous character, and like every force of nature, his alignment with good or evil principles within the Jujutsu Kaisen universe is a matter of perspective.

So, it’s up to fans to decide whether Toji is good or evil—for many of us, he’s an exceptionally fun character with a grudge against a Jujutsu Kaisen society that has done him wrong due to his in-born lack of cursed energy.
