Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Coming To Theaters

By Jacob VanGundy | Published

Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 is being reworked as a compilation movie next year and will even get a theatrical release. This film version will condense one of the popular shonen anime’s arcs into a film. While the movie won’t tell a new story, it’s an opportunity for the show to be enjoyed theatrically and gives fans a more concise way to enjoy the story.

The compilation film will adapt the “Hidden Inventory/Premature Death” arc from Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. In the anime, that arc was told in the first five episodes of the second season, meaning the movie will only cover the beginning of the season, which is a flashback arc set before the rest of the series. The movie doesn’t have a specific release date yet, but it’s slated to come out sometime in 2025.

No Word On New Scenes

Compilation films reuse footage from pre-existing media, editing that footage into movie form. In anime, that generally means taking animation from the series and editing it down into a more condensed and self-contained movie. Sometimes, these movies contain new segments of higher-quality animation, but it’s unknown if that will be true for the Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 compilation movie.

An Anime Tradition

While Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 is the latest instance, compilation films have been a common practice in anime for decades. Classic examples include the first three Mobile Suit Gundam movies and Space Battleship Yamato, which featured a controversial new ending from the series when it aired in theaters. More recent examples include the Demon Slayer movies To the Swordsmith Village and To the Haishera Training.

The Yuji-less Flashback Arc

Taking the world by storm, Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most popular modern anime. It follows high schooler Yuji Itadori, who becomes the host of an evil ancient sorcerer and uses his power to battle monsters alongside his friends. Season 2 is split between the flashback arc being adapted for the compilation film and a modern story following Yuji and his friends.

A Multi-Media Franchise

The Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 compilation movie is just a small part of the popular anime’s multi-media success story. As the original manga is coming to a close, the anime has two seasons and a prequel movie already, and the compilation film will be joined by a follow-up series. The series has also spawned a video game, a pair of novels, and tons of merchandise.

Compilation Films Are Hit Or Miss

Despite its announcement and clear scope, a few unanswered questions remain about the upcoming Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 compilation movie. One of the biggest questions is if the movie will contain any new content, particularly new animation or a more fleshed-out story. The other major concern is if it will receive a theatrical release in the US, which is rare for compilation films, but may be possible given how popular anime movies have become in the US recently.

As part of a massively popular series, the movie adaptation of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 could be a hit despite rehashing a story that’s already been told. Compilation films tend to be hit or miss with their core audience, and it’s hard to say how this one will land. As we get closer to 2025, more information about the movie could help fans decide if it’s worth their attention.
