Jujutsu Kaisen Wins Big At Crunchyroll Anime Awards
Anime fans voted in droves this year for the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards and helped Jujutsu Kaisen have a record-breaking night. The popular anime shattered My Hero Academia’s previous record of eight wins by raking in 11 awards. One of which was the coveted Anime of the Year.
Anime Of The Year
Along with winning Anime of the Year, Jujutsu Kaisen also took home the Crunchyroll Anime Awards trophies for Best Action, Best Character Design, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Ending Sequence, Best Opening Sequence, and Best Supporting Character for the powerful Jujutsu sorcerer Satoru Gojo. Three Jujutsu Kaisen voice actors also took home Best Voice Actor Performance, including Gojo’s Japanese voice actor Yuichi Nakamura, his Brazilian Portuguese voice actor Leo Rabelo, and Geto’s French voice actor Martial Le Minoux.
Demon Slayer Took Home Awards
It was a pretty impressive night at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards for Jujutsu Kaisen, which had to beat out fan favorites like Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer, Bocchi the Rock, Oshi No Ko, and Vinland Saga to take the Anime of the Year spot. Of course, plenty of these shows got their due elsewhere, with Demon Slayer winning awards like Best Animation and Best Art Direction, while Bocchi the Rock scored Best Slice of Life. Chainsaw Man also nabbed the Best New Series and Best Voice Actor Performance (English) for Ryan Colt Levy’s voice work as Denji.
The Anya Forger Award
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards also awarded other fan favorites like One Piece, Attack on Titan, and Spy X Family. One Piece took home the Best Continuing Anime series award and Luffy won the Best Main Character award thanks to the stunning reveal of Gear 5. Meanwhile, Attack on Titan won Best Drama and Best Anime Score, while Spy X Family took home Best Comedy and “Must Protect At All Cost” Character for Anya Forger.
The Most Votes Of All Time
The Crunchyroll Anime Awards was bigger than ever this year, as it broke records by bringing in more votes from anime fans than the ceremony ever has before. Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini revealed that 34 million fans voted this year, which is almost double the 18 million votes cast in 2023. With that in mind, the 11-trophy win for Jujutsu Kaisen is especially impressive.
MAPPA Animation Controversy
One might even say that Jujutsu Kaisen’s multi-win night at the Anime Awards will be contentious in the anime community due to the controversies surrounding the recent season. While the animators and talent who worked on the season undoubtedly should be recognized for their hard work, Studio Mappa has faced criticism for an allegedly toxic work environment for animators that included tight deadlines and low compensation. Multiple animators expressed their frustration with the studio on social media, specifically regarding the production schedule for Jujutsu Kaisen’s second season.
Here’s To Next Year!
In any case, the record-breaking numbers for the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards and the array of series represented at the ceremony shows that anime is as popular and strong as ever. Hopefully, that immense popularity will not cause animators to suffer crunch schedules. You can stream Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 on Crunchyroll now.
