After the gigantic success of Joker, which made more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, and earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. and DC would want to capitalize on that film’s success. Instead of making a direct sequel to Joker, a new rumor seems to suggest that we could see multiple characters who were inspired by Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, including one Joker played by Jude Law.
This rumor comes from We Got This Covered, which says that Joker might receive multiple sequels, which would span multiple generations and show different characters who were inspired by Arthur Fleck. The theory is that Jude Law would play an older man – despite being only two years older than Phoenix – who has taken on the Joker persona, while Jim Carrey is also suggested as playing another Joker.
While Joker was intended to stand on its own and not have any sequels, that billion-dollar box-office makes it seem as though Warner Bros. found a way around that. There have been no confirmations that Warner Bros. is planning on making a direct sequel to Joker, however, director Todd Phillips has said he would be up for a sequel, if Joaquin Phoenix was also interested. Phoenix has since said that he believes the possibilities with the Joker character are “endless,” that might be still up Warner Bros.’ sleeve. But if not, this concept with Jude Law could be an intriguing way to go.
There were also further rumors in recent years that there was a sequel to Joker in the works, with The Hollywood Reporter even reporting that the sequel was happening. The rumors ended up being false, and Phillips said that while there were discussions about a sequel, nothing was in the works, even though it remains a possibility. Phillips has also said he would be interested in doing other similar spinoffs about other Batman villains, or exploring Gotham in some new way, but again, nothing has come of these rumors either. However, if there is truth to this rumor about multiple Jokers played by actors like Jude Law and Jim Carrey, that is one way Phillips could further explore Gotham.
Yet We Got This Covered also pointed out that Jude Law is already a major part of several other franchises. Law is already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having played the Captain Marvel villain Yon-Rogg, although it’s unclear if his character will return for the sequel. Law is also playing Captain Hook in Disney’s latest live-action reboot, Peter Pan & Wendy. Law is even headlining another Warner Bros. franchise, as he will return as Albus Dumbledore in the third Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film. But if these Joker sequels are one-and-done for the actors, it would theoretically allow the actors to play the character, without being tied down to a major superhero franchise as well.
But considering how popular Todd Phillips’ Joker was, we’re certainly going to see a follow-up of some form. Beyond that, Jared Leto is also reprising the role of the Joker for Zack Snyder’s upcoming cut of the Justice League, while there are rumors that Matt Reeves’ The Batman series of films will eventually bring in Joker to face off against Robert Pattinson’s Batman. If we’re already going to have multiple actors playing Joker in multiple roles, why not throw Jude Law into the mix?
