Fantastic Beasts is expanding the already massive universe that is Harry Potter and in it, Jude Law plays one of the franchise’s most well-known characters, Albus Dumbledore. We Got This Covered reports that Fantastic Beasts 3 will explore the character’s sexuality and his feelings for Gellert Grindelwald.
Dumbledore being gay was confirmed by J.K. Rowling Back in 2007, and since then she has had a history of discussing his sexuality along with other characters. These confirmations have been met with a mixed reception with Rowling being criticized for saying these things without having them explored in the books. With this new franchise of movies, maybe Jude Law will have the opportunity to bring this side of the wizard to life.
Without comment from Warner Bros, it is hard to know if this is the direction that will be taken with Jude Law and his role in the Harry Potter spinoff. His playing the character at a younger age could open that door, especially as fans have wanted to see it portrayed in any capacity, whether that is in a novel or in a movie.
Jude Law potentially portraying a gay character is one of many challenges for Fantast Beasts and Where to Find Them considering it’s a franchise full of difficulties. For one, Grindelwald was recast from Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) to Mad Mikkelson (Hannibal) due to the former losing a libel suit with a British tabloid. Regarding the situation, Law commented on it as all you can do is to “defer to the studio.” He further explained that “you have to turn up and play your part.”
Along these lines in the Harry Potter franchise, tied to the possible decision to make Jude Law as Dumbledore openly gay, are Rowling’s statements on the subject in the past. The author has made plenty of opinions public about the transgender community, firing up controversy and bringing on boycotts on buying her work. It has put heat on projects that she is not attached to that connect to her hit fantasy series. Decisions about this have had to be made, like Warner Bros. coming out regarding the upcoming game to say that she is “not directly involved.”
The sharp decline in the reception of the films starring Jude Law has put its future in jeopardy. The first was well-reviewed among critics and audiences, with scores on Rotton Tomatoes being in the 70 percent realm. But the sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, was heavily panned by both critics and audiences. The decline in the box office does not help either. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was successful, grossing $814 million worldwide with a budget of $180 million. But its sequel did decline, grossing $654 million off a $200 million budget. It has led to rumors that the third entry might be the last if it were to potentially bomb.
The untitled third Fantastic Beasts with Jude Law, Mads Mikkelson, and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) will hit theaters on July 15, 2022. It was originally scheduled for this year, November 12, but what happened with Depp and COVID-19 has delayed the film.
