Joseph Gordon-Levitt is having a heck of a week when it comes to the casting news. He recently just joined a highly-anticipated movie with Eddie Murphy that’s been decades in the making. That alone would be enough to just look forward to. But now there is more news on the film front for the talented actor and he’s going to be joining a Marvel star for a sci-fi thriller. According to Variety, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson will be the leads in Ash which is starting to sound like a real nail-biter for the two talents.
From the loglines, Ash is a space thriller that will have Tessa Thompson playing a worker on a space station who wakes up on a distant and possibly unknown planet only to find that all of her crewmates have been violently killed. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s character is sent to figure out what exactly happened here, to solve the mystery, but it becomes increasingly clear that Thompson’s character might not be innocent in this whole thing. It’s unclear if this is a bottle-type movie with Thompson and Gordon-Levitt carrying a majority of the interactions or if there will be a broader scope to the issues in space.
And there’s reason to get excited on the creative front for this film. While Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson are the stars, Neill Blomkamp is on as producer of the film. And Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison) is on as the director. Flying Lotus is best known for his career as a rapper, record producer and DJ but has made forays into the movie world. Most of that has been through original scores, which he will handle here as well. But this will be his first live-action, feature film directorial work.
As for Joseph Gordon-Levitt, well the actor just signed on for another movie when it was announced on Monday that he would be joining Eddie Murphy for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. It hasn’t been disclosed what role he will be playing in the film, the fourth installment of this franchise. The last time we saw the titular character was all the way back in 1994 when Beverly Hills Cop III completely bombed with critics and in the theaters. But with Murphy on the relative comeback trail, there’s reason to suspect this next installment makes up for some of those wrongs.
This will be the first time Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be working together on a feature film. She’s coming off a summer that saw her reprise her Valkyrie role in Thor: Love and Thunder, her third movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Next up for the actress is The Listener which is being directed by Steve Buscemi. In it, she’ll be playing a helpline volunteer. And then she’ll team back up with Michael B. Jordan in Creed III.
Currently, we are waiting to hear a production schedule and release date for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tessa Thompson in Ash. With casting rounding out some of those target dates should be coming out in due order.
