Marvel’s Newest Star Arrested For Assault, Disaster For Disney
Marvel star Jonathan Majors has been arrested in New York on alleged assault charges against a woman.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s Jonathan Majors has reportedly been arrested in New York on alleged assault charges against a woman, according to a report from Deadline. The woman, who is not named, is said to have suffered minor injuries to her head and neck and has been checked in at an area hospital. The Kang the Conqueror actor and his legal team have denied the charges of strangulation, assault, and harassment, stating “He has done nothing wrong. We look forward to clearing his name and clearing this up.”
Jonathan Majors has had an incredible year for his acting career, with a leading role in Creed 3, a number of upcoming MCU appearances, and his latest indie film, Magazine Dreams finally receiving a theatrical release date this week. News of this alleged controversy surrounding the actor is sure to make Disney executives squirm, as Majors is set to portray the overarching antagonist of the next several Marvel films including 2025’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and 2026’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Majors’ latest outing with the enormous media company came in the form of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which received mixed reviews at the box office.
This news compounds with recent reports that Disney plans to slash their Marvel budget, reducing the total number of projects released each year, making Jonathan Majors’ Kang even more significant by contrast, as he’s meant to carry the franchise as its main villain. As we’ve seen with cases such as James Gunn, Disney takes controversy with its creators very seriously, and will likely launch an independent investigation into this alleged incident before proceeding.
The alleged incident took place on March 25, with police responding to a 911 phone call placed from a Manhattan apartment. According to public information provided to Deadline by the deputy commissioner’s office, Jonathan Majors was taken into custody after the woman claimed to the police that she was assaulted. Majors is facing charges including strangulation, assault, and harassment, though the actor was released from police custody on the same evening.
While the 30-year-old woman involved in the alleged incident remained unnamed, her relationship to the Marvel star was labeled as “domestic” according to the press. Jonathan Majors has not yet released a statement himself but has expressed through his spokesperson that he maintains his innocence. At this time, there have been no statements by Disney or any other companies associated with Majors in a professional capacity.
If Disney does intend to cut ties with Jonathan Majors over the alleged incident, it wouldn’t be their first time recasting an MCU actor. Edward Norton famously portrayed the Hulk in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, before Mark Ruffalo signed on to portray the character throughout the future of the MCU following reports that Norton was incredibly difficult to work with on set. Terrance Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle for the role of James Rhodes due to financial contract disputes, and even Josh Brolin‘s Thanos was portrayed by another actor, Damion Poitier, in his first appearance in 2012’s The Avengers.
Of course, there have been no rumors of recasting just yet, as Jonathan Majors maintains his innocence in this alleged incident. For now, all we can do is wait for updates as the police conclude their investigation.
