Jonathan Majors Reveals His Favorite Marvel Movie
According to ComicBook.com, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’s Jonathan Majors has three favorite Marvel films, the first of which is Black Panther. Second (and apparently taking turns as the first, just like when you ask a cute little kid what his favorite dinosaur is) is the first Iron Man movie starring Robert Downey, Jr. Avengers: Endgame takes third place.
That particular top three probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise for most Marvel fans. Both Iron Man and Black Panther are perennial fan favorites, and Jonathan Major also stars in Creed III with Michael B. Jordan, who was the villain in the latter. Plus, Endgame is the film that led to Jonathan Majors entering the MCU via the Ant-Man series in the first place.
Jonathan Majors’ first official appearance as Kang the Conqueror, a huge Marvel baddie, will come in Quantumania early next year. For those who haven’t read the comics, Kang the Conqueror is a time-traveling villain who has met with other variants of himself in the Multiverse, which he also just so happens to be trying to conquer (thus the name “the Conqueror”). Instead of seeking a way to make peace with every version of himself that exists, he seeks only power and control.
This villain has a very important role to play in the upcoming Phases 5 and 6 of the MCU, and Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige says that there is no better man for the job. “There’s nobody’s shoulders I’d rather be putting the multiverse saga on than [Jonathan Majors’],” he revealed in an interview.
Playing a character like Kang the Conqueror takes a lot of talent. Jonathan Majors must not just play one villain, but multiple different incarnations of that villain across the multiverse. He must play many characters that, while being variations of the same one, are all completely diverse.
For this reason, Johnathan Majors’ Kang is very different from the previous boss-level villain in the MCU, Thanos. He is not just one man bent on balancing out the universe, but many different characters all rolled into one, with the goal of taking over the many universes that exist within the MCU.
This will not be Jonathan Majors’ first foray into the MCU, however. He has actually already shown up as another version of Kang the Conqueror in the Disney+ series Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston. In this series, his character was called He Who Remains and was the creator of the Time Variance Authority.
In Loki, he lives at the Citadel at the End of Time, but is eventually killed by Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino). When Jonathan Majors appears in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, he will be a variant of this enigmatic character of He Who Remains from another universe.
This upcoming Ant-Man and the Wasp installment will set the stage for Kang the Conqueror to become the next top villain in the MCU. Jonathan Majors will then star in another Avengers installment, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is set to be released in May of 2025 and kicks off the MCU’s Phase 6.
So, seeing as how important Kang the Conqueror is to the MCU, It’s a good thing that Jonathan Majors is such a big fan of the franchise!
