Jonathan Frakes is hopeful that Star Trek: Legacy, a proposed spinoff of Star Trek: Picard, which would continue the story of the characters in the 25th century, will eventually get the green light. “I certainly have hopes and thoughts,” the actor told IndieWire. “Updates I don’t have, but I do know that the franchise is in great shape.”

Upcoming Projects

“I do know that this Starfleet Academy series is going to be an entirely different animal, and I think that the success of what I’m imagining, the success of Section 31, Michelle Yeoh’s movie, is only going to catapult us further into the future,” Jonathan Frakes continued.

“And my hope obviously is that we’ll find a place then to continue the [Star Trek]: Legacy story.”

If Jonathan Frakes’ hope for Star Trek: Legacy does come true, the series would likely focus on the adventures of Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) commanding the USS Enterprise-G.

The show would explore the 25th century, featuring characters from Deep Space Nine, such as Raffi Musiker and Worf, and their children, like Alexander.

Key characters from Picard Season 3, including Raffi (Michelle Hurd), Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and other crew members, are expected to return if the series, envisioned by Terry Matalas, is greenlit.

Despite significant fan interest and speculation, Paramount has not officially committed to the project, which is why Jonathan Frakes was unable to offer a positive update about Star Trek: Legacy.

Obstacles

The primary obstacles faced by Jonathan Frakes’ Star Trek: Legacy include financial constraints, streaming limitations, and prioritization of the aforementioned Star Trek projects like Starfleet Academy and the Section 31 movie.

Matalas has expressed a willingness to adapt Star Trek: Legacy into a television movie if necessary. But as of now, the project remains stuck in the concept phase.

Jonathan Frakes, a champion of the Star Trek: Legacy series, is best known for his role as Commander William Riker on The Next Generation series.

He has also directed numerous episodes of various Star Trek television shows, including The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, and Picard.

Hurd Heard Something

In January, Picard star Michelle Hurd shared an update on the potential spinoff, hinting that there is a good chance it will be made.

Hurd, who portrayed Raffi Musiker in all three seasons of Picard, suggested that Star Trek: Legacy will come to fruition as long as fans remain interested. “We have hands, fingers, everything’s crossed for Star Trek: Legacy,” the actress said.

While Jonathan Frakes’ Star Trek: Legacy remains influx, fans still have Star Trek content to look forward to. Section 31 follows Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) as she works with a clandestine division of Starfleet.

Known as Section 31, this division is tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, but its methods are often morally ambiguous and sometimes even illegal.

The movie is a spinoff from the series Star Trek: Discovery. It is expected to be released on the Paramount+ streaming service in late 2025.

While exact plot details are currently unknown, the story is expected to explore the darker aspects of the Star Trek universe.

The other project fans can look forward to away from Jonathan Frakes’ Star Trek: Legacy is Starfleet Academy.

The live-action series follows a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in the prestigious Starfleet Academy, located in San Francisco. The show focuses on these young cadets as they navigate friendships, rivalries, first loves, and the challenges of becoming Starfleet officers.
