These days, with the way the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going, it seems like every actor and actress working in Hollywood will eventually make his or her way into the franchise. With so many movies and series on the way there would appear to be more than enough characters to get everyone involved at some point. This is why when one hears that Jon Hamm could get into the mix, it totally makes sense. As a villain even? Sure, why not? Not everyone needs to play the hero these days. Sometimes the bad guys are more fun. He recently discussed how it was close for him to have played Mister Sinister in a production and that he’d be interested in revisiting the possibility at some point in the future.
Jon Hamm was speaking with Josh Wilding on YouTube (via The Direct) while promoting his upcoming movie Confess, Fletch. In it, he talked about how he had originally been in talks to play Mister Sinister in the past and that there could be some interest in the future. He was referring to The New Mutants which came out a couple of years ago. Hamm had been rumored to be on board as the character at the time. He said, “I’m, like anybody else, would be thrilled to be a part of that storytelling, having been a big comic book fan throughout my early teens and early twenties. So, we’ll see. I don’t know. It would be a fun person to play, that’s for sure. I look good in purple, I’ll put it that way.”
You can see the clip below in which Jon Hamm talks about the potential for having been cast as the character with Hamm’s comments about Mister Sinister coming in the final minute or so.
Now, it’s worth noting here that this supposed Jon Hamm casting as Mister Sinister was for The New Mutants which was part of the X-Men franchise from 20th Century Studios. While the movie came out, the character of Mister Sinister was never actually included in the production. Hamm had discussed playing the role and having the character teased at some point for future productions. That didn’t come to fruition though and the movie ended up as something of a disaster for the studio. It scored only 35% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned just $49 million at the box office. 20th Century Studios eventually came under the Disney umbrella which allows the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This latter part is what could allow Jon Hamm to take on the Mister Sinister role in the future. With the X-Men and some other characters set to enter the official Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s going to be yet another influx of characters into the mix over the next few years. That’s going to mean heroes and villains alike. With Jon Hamm still expressing interest in the character (including thinking he looks good in the requisite color), we could see the stars align.
Could we still see Jon Hamm pop up as a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? There’s certainly reason to think it could be the case and if he’s still interested in a part from the past then it makes even more sense.
