Jon Bernthal is well-known for the Marvel series Punisher. The deep acceptance of his role has led to plenty of fans calling for him to remain the Punisher throughout the grander scheme of the Marvel Universe as well. Frank Castle is known to be one of the most anti-cop and anti-authority figures in all comics. Bernthal is now ironically playing for the other team as he has been shown in the new HBO series, We Own This City, in full detective and cop attire. The Punisher would certainly not approve of this.
It is kind of odd to see Jon Bernthal in full cop duds, as most of us are used to seeing him covered in blood from anyone who stands in his way, and that usually includes those who are attempting to arrest him. Well, not him, the Punisher. You get the idea. However, HBO does make some quality content, so it is likely that this role is going to be expertly played by Bernthal and be another great series in the production companies extensive lineup.
Jon Bernthal is set to play the titular role of Sgt. Wayne Jenkins, who is thrust into the world of the Baltimore Police Department and their Gun Trace Task Force. The task force’s actions lead to massive changes throughout the city, mass arrests, and drug prohibition policies favored over actual police work lead to a powder keg of corruption. In typical Bernthal fashion, he plays a cop that goes rogue after the war on drugs in Baltimore spins out of control. At least he will be somewhat anti-authority in this new series.
From the images shown on Collider, it looks to be that Jon Bernthal is deeply embedded in the task force’s dealings, and depending on how the series pans out, he might have to arrest and take down some of the cops in his own station. Someone get this man a vest with a white skull logo.
Jon Bernthal is being joined by Wunmi Mosaka, who plays Nicole Steele, an attorney for the Department of Justice who is actively investigating the task force. Addition cast members include Jaime Hector, McKinley Belcher III, Josh Charles, and Dagmara Domińczyk. The main cast is rounded out with Darrell Britt-Gibson, Rob Brown, Don Harvey, David Corenswet, Larry Mitchell, Ian Duff, Delaney Williams, and Lucas Van Engen.
On top of the amazing cast that has been announced, Jon Bernthal will reunite with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who is set to direct and executive produce We Own This City. Green and Bernthal worked together on the Academy Award-nominated, King Richard, which also starred Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, and Demi Singleton. It is a little odd to see Bernthal in shaggy hair in the above picture, but let’s just assume he grew his hair out in spite of authoritative figures.
We Own This City is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on April 25th, and fans will get to see a new version of Jon Bernthal. Maybe he will still be hurting and gunning down cops, but just corrupt ones. This man is truly one of the best anti-hero portrayers in all of Hollywood. Give him a Punisher movie already.
