DC shocked the world when it announced that Batgirl was canceled. Well, that is not on DC, but completely on Warner Bros. Discovery. All news in the DC camp is not bad news though, as we have finally been given the release date for Joker 2 aka Joker: Folie À Deux. The Todd Phillips-directed sequel will be making its way into theaters on October 4th, 2024. We will have to wait another two years to see the film, but at least Warner Bros. Discovery is not giving up on everything.
Joker 2 will bring back Todd Phillips in the directing chair, alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who pulled in Best Actor at the Academy Awards. The last time we saw Arthur Fleck (Pheonix), he was sitting in a psychiatric ward, running around with blood on his feet. There were rumors that Lady Gaga had been cast in the role of Harley Quinn, and she would be joining Fleck in some grotesque theatrics. There were also rumors that the sequel would be a musical. Those reports were never substantiated. More rumors came out that the film was going to be far more violent than the first, bringing in elements from A Clockwork Orange. In fact, the rape scene in that film is said to be mimicked in a way. Again, these are all rumors at this point. Folie À Deux does mean a mental illness shared by two people, so we could be seeing Gaga’s character be just as twisted as Fleck’s. Or rather, Fleck could be imagining another persona attached to his own psyche.
DC might be having to stomach getting a ton of films canceled, but at least they know their most anticipated title won’t see the same fate. Batgirl is the only film that has been canceled thus far, but more could be looming. Even the newest Scooby-Doo animated film got the ax by Warner Bros. Discovery. This could mean that Black Canary and Blue Beetle are next on the list to be canceled. However, Joker 2 will be moving forward as planned. It makes sense considering the film was able to net two Academy Awards. That is also not to mention that the film pulled in a whopping 1.07 billion in worldwide box office numbers.
Joker 2 is going to be one of the most anticipated releases, especially considering that the first film saw some huge success both in the terms of money made and in accolades. October 4th, 2024, is quite a long way to wait, but we are sure to get more details about the plot of the film in the coming months. Then again, Phillips could be keeping everything about the film a secret to shock everyone.
Joker 2 will be released in October of 2024, which is exactly five years after the first film was released. This could also be a genius plot enacted by Todd Phillips and Warner Bros. Discovery. Either way, we are more than excited to see this film. Hopefully, something can happen to push the film up a bit, but for now, we will all have to patiently wait a bit over two years to see another chilling performance from Joaquin Phoenix.
