Johnny Depp’s Pirates Return Confirmed By Most Important Producer?
Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed that Johnny Depp is slowly being worked back into Pirates of the Caribbean.
Jerry Bruckheimer recently told AP Entertainment that they’re “working on” and “taking baby steps toward a screenplay” for a potential Johnny Depp Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Fans of the franchise will know that Bruckheimer is a major producer for the Pirates franchise, so this is definitely big news for those hoping for another movie. While he also said there’s nothing “definitive” at this time, it does sound like they’re trying to make something happen.
This is surprising news indeed, especially considering Johnny Depp has mentioned his lack of interest in returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp had a very public and tumultuous legal battle with his ex-wife, Amber Heard, earlier this year, and before the trial, he had a fallout with Disney. Disney fired Depp from the franchise shortly after Heard posted an article for the Washington Post where she claimed to be a victim of domestic abuse (without directly naming the abuser).
It seemed like Johnny Depp hadn’t forgiven the firing during his court case. Depp affirmed that he wouldn’t come back to the Pirates franchise even if Disney approached him with $300 million and a million alpacas. After Depp’s legal win, fans had little hope that he would return to the franchise, even if Disney wanted him.
Now, with Bruckheimer’s comments, it seems like the tides may be turning and Johnny Depp would have interest in coming back as Captain Jack Sparrow for another Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Of course, Bruckheimer said they were merely inching toward getting a screenplay written, which means they’re very early on in the development process. It could be quite a few years before we see this film come to fruition.
This news also comes in the wake of Margot Robbie’s Pirates film getting pushed to the side. Perhaps Disney decided to pause Margot Robbie’s film and focus on a film that brings Johnny Depp back into the fold. This could be a chance for the franchise to introduce Margot Robbie’s character, give closure to Depp’s character, and let Robbie take over things from there.
While Johnny Depp may or may not return to his Pirates of the Caribbean role for Disney, it certainly seems like he’s willing to reprise the role for the right reason. Earlier this week, Depp recorded a video as Jack Sparrow for an 11-year-old fan that was arranged by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The young fan, who has undergone multiple heart transplant surgeries, posted the personal message from Captain Sparrow to his YouTube channel.
While it’s just a coincidence, the timing of Johnny Depp reprising his Pirates role is certainly apropos with Bruckheimer making these comments in the same week. It is good to see that deserving kids are still able to pull the performance out of Depp when needed, but that doesn’t guarantee a grand return to the franchise. We’ll just have to wait and see if Bruckheimer’s comments ever come to fruition.
While we wait to find out if Johnny Depp will be appearing in any future Pirates movies, you can see him next in Jeanne du Barry. Jeanne du Barry will be Depp’s first big role since his legal battle. He will be playing Louis XV opposite Maiwenn’s titular character.
