Johnny Depp Scares Crew Of Newest Movie
Johnny Depp has started being able to reclaim his film career after overcoming his scandals when he largely won his trial against Amber Heard. But it sounds like some of the actor’s old ways continue to follow him. Depp has had a reputation for being challenging to work with on movie sets, and now the director of his latest film, Jeanne du Barry, is reportedly saying the same. Director Maiwenn said it even got to the point that some of the crew were scared of Depp.
Johnny Depp Difficult
Discussing what it was like to work with Johnny Depp on the film, Maiwenn said, “I have to be honest. It’s difficult to shoot with him. All the crew were scared because he has a different kind of humour and we didn’t know if he was going to be on time, or if he was going to be OK to say his lines… I mean, even if he was there on set, on time, the crew were afraid of him.”
Not The First Time
This is not the first time that such stories have circulated around Johnny Depp. Especially during his legal proceedings, rumors followed him suggesting that he supposedly showed up on set having been drinking, had not rehearsed his script, and would need an earpiece to feed him his lines.
Depp denied much of this when directly asked about it on trial, but these new anecdotes from Maiwenn will likely strike a similar tone to many.
Just The Movie Process?
However, it is also unclear how severe Maiwenn is in her criticisms of Johnny Depp, as she made it clear he was not the only one she had challenges with.
“There was no time for rehearsals. I asked for time but, for whatever reason, he wasn’t available,” she said. “He had a coach, but he couldn’t work with her beforehand. So. OK. I discovered his accent wasn’t perfect. So a few times, I decided to cut his lines. But that also happened with the French actors. It happens!”
With the context of those additional comments, it almost sounds as if Maiwenn might be framing her difficulties with Johnny Depp as just part of the process of making movies. Perhaps after the movie releases, some of the other crew involved might shed light on how serious the statements of them being scared of Depp should be taken.
Jeanne du Barry A Hit With Critics
Regardless of the behind-the-scenes situation, the final product has been successful in earning praise from critics. Jeanne du Barry received strong positive feedback in its debut at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. While there, Johnny Depp reportedly received a seven minute long standing ovation following the conclusion of the movie. Depp was said to be moved to tears by the reaction that he received.
Johnny Depp’s First Major Role In Comeback
Jeanne du Barry has its official debut in the United States on May 2, so it will be interesting to see what American audiences think of the movie.
It marks Johnny Depp’s first major film role since his lengthy legal battle with Amber Heard, and seems like it could be a test for if audiences are willing to welcome him back at this point. During the height of his scandals, Depp was fired from his role as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore.
Johnny Depp Moving Forward
Disney had also made it clear at the time that they were looking for a new actor for the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, replacing arguably Johnny Depp’s most well-known role as Jack Sparrow.
However, since his legal victories, there have been reports that Disney might be open to working with Depp again.
It is unclear if the feeling is mutual on his end, as he was at one time adamant that he would not return even if he was given a fortune and a pack of alpacas.
