Terry Gilliam has confirmed that his next cinematic venture, The Carnival at the End of Days, will feature an all-star cast including Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver, and Jason Momoa. In the feature, Depp will play Satan, and Bridges will play God. Gilliam shared the news in a recent interview with the French publication Premiere, during which he offered insights into the film’s unique premise and ambitious production plans.

Johnny Depp Is A Satan That’s Saving Humanity

Gilliam, who originally rose to fame in the 70s by starring alongside John Cleese in Britain’s most famous comedy troupe, Monty Python, is known for his distinctive and often surreal filmmaking style. While discussing his new movie, he revealed that The Carnival at the End of Days will not disappoint as it explores a provocative and darkly humorous narrative. The story centers around God’s decision to annihilate humanity, with Johnny Depp’s Satan emerging as the unlikely savior.

According to Gilliam, the twist is that Johnny Depp’s version of Satan needs to save humanity because he needs souls to continue to go to hell, or else he will end up unemployed forever. The director hinted at The Carnival at the End of Days’ irreverent tone, stating, “It will be very funny for those who like to be offended.”

Jeff Bridges Is A Different Sort Of Almighty

Elaborating on the characterization of Bridges’ God in The Carnival at the End of Days, Gilliam described it as a dramatic departure from traditional Christian depictions. Rather than depicting God as a benevolent big man in the sky, Gilliam plans for Bridges to portray Him as a force of nature that can talk to people. Gilliam didn’t go into detail to describe how Johnny Depp’s version of Satan would differ from the typical depictions, other than the fact that the fallen angel will be the one saving humanity.

A-List Co-Stars

Adam Driver and Jason Momoa’s roles in the film are yet to be detailed, but their inclusion adds even more star power to the already bright casting. The star power likely adds to the cost of the budget as well, which Gilliam has already indicated will be “very expensive.” According to the director, a bulk of the budget will be allocated to surrounding God with fifteen or more CGI animals in one scene, and there will likely be special effects needed to bring Johnny Depp’s Kingdom of Hell to life.

Gilliam And Depp Worked Together Before

Production for The Carnival at the End of Days is slated to begin in January 2025. This film marks another collaboration between Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp, who previously worked together on Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Their past projects have been critically acclaimed for their bold and imaginative storytelling, which raises expectations for their latest endeavor.

A Star-Studded Surreal Film

As preparations for the film move forward, fans of Gilliam’s work and the star-studded cast eagerly await further updates. The Carnival at the End of Days promises to be a visually striking and thought-provoking addition to Terry Gilliam’s and Johnny Depp’s noteworthy filmography, both of whom have a penitent for surrealism and telling stories that challenge conventional notions.
