Johnny Depp is beginning to make his comeback as an actor, but this particular role as a bumbling shopkeeper is weird even for him.

Against all odds, Johnny Depp is reemerging as an actor, after a long stint of being known more as a controversial public figure. During a seemingly endless series of legal matters, Depp is beginning to take on new acting roles and they are turning out to be a little weird. While he is best known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he is appearing in roles in CGI cartoons about flightless waterfowl, the worst king of France, and now, as a bumbling shopkeeper in video games. Here, check it out:
That is a short trailer for the upcoming MMORPG video game Sea of Dawn. In both the trailer and game, Johnny Depp plays a blind, very odd shopkeeper named Phillip who seemingly acts as a kind of call to adventure. The game itself is an open-world seafaring game in which players can visit 200 unique cities, battle other players on the high seas, engage in some nautical commerce (most likely facilitated by Johnny Depp’s Phillip), and even encounter fabled beasts of the deep like the Kraken and three-headed sea monsters. In short, it seems pretty obvious why Sea of Dawn would seek to enlist the star of the Pirates of the Caribbean as a celebrity character for the game. Here’s a closer look at Johnny Depp as Phillip:
Johnny Depp’s Phillip actually seems to have a lot in common with Captain Jack Sparrow. Both seem to teeter on the age of sanity at all times. Both ramble in long, nonsensical stories about feats and events that seem a little too strange to be true. Honestly, both look kind of gross behind a tangle of hair and beard. According to Johnny Depp, he helped construct the look and personality of the character along with the developers of Sea of Dawn, which certainly seems true. Also according to the star of Rango, Phillip’s appearance is based on a dream that he once had, which makes us never want to know much more about his nightmares.
Johnny Depp was fairly recently one of the biggest and highest-paid movie stars in the world. He was part of two huge franchises, starring as the breakout character of Pirates of the Caribbean and the villain of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. That all came crashing to a halt, first with a reputation-destroying article in Rolling Stone that depicted Johnny Depp as a hard-drinking, out-of-touch Hollywood wreck, then with a series of legal actions between him and his estranged spouse Amber Heard.
Since the extremely high-profile defamation case between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard resulted in a verdict largely in the former’s favor, things seem to be turning around for him. In addition to starring in Sea of Dawn (which was developed by software company Changyou and has already been released in China), Johnny Depp will be starring in the upcoming film Jeanne du Barry, in which he will play the French King Louis XV.
