Johnny Depp Returns To The Big Screen, See The Jeanne Du Barry Trailer
The trailer is out for Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp’s first appearance onscreen since he won his highly-publicized defamation suit against ex-wife Amber Heard. It’s also Depp’s first performance speaking all in French.
Its plot centers on Madame du Barry; the last of the mistresses of the French king Louis XV (played by Johnny Depp).
Her relationship with the king scandalizes the court because of her low birth and refusal to conform to royal tradition. Du Barry was the illegitimate daughter of a seamstress and her father was unknown.

Jeanne du Barry is written, directed, and produced by Johnny Depp’s co-star, the mononymous French filmmaker Maïwenn (Madame du Barry). Maïwenn told Harper’s Bazaar she’s been thinking about bringing du Barry’s real-life story to the screen for 18 years, ever since she saw du Barry portrayed in Sofia Coppola 2006’s film Marie Antoinette. Du Barry and Marie Antoniette had a famously contentious relationship.
Speaking of that, there were rumors of trouble between Maïwenn and Johnny Depp during filming. According to Deadline, Maïwenn said that what happened on set wasn’t unlike what happens on most sets, “Johnny can be adorable and also hard. I am the same.”
The Jeanne du Barry plot centers on Madame du Barry; the last of the mistresses of the French king Louis XV (played by Johnny Depp).
Maïwenn described some days as “wonderful” and some as “complicated”. She said it’s hard to make movies ever since the pandemic and because of budgets.
As for the film in French, Johnny Depp has said he worked with a coach to help with pronunciation. Jeanne du Barry debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year and got a seven-minute standing ovation. While the period piece only has a 49 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, it has performed well at the box office in France. It doesn’t open in the United States until May 2 and that’s in select theaters.
Many are calling the film Johnny Depp’s comeback, but he’s not too sure about that, telling Reuters, “I didn’t go anywhere.”
Last year, Depp won his defamation trial with former wife, actor Amber Heard (Aquaman), with jurors awarding him over $10 million in damages. However, two years earlier, Depp lost a libel suit in Britain against the Sun tabloid, which called him a “wife beater.” In the wake of that, Depp was dropped from the Fantastic Beasts movie franchise (Harry Potter spinoff), where he played Grindelwald.
Heard has accused Depp of verbal and physical abuse.
As for another successful franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean, it’s not known if Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said they are going to reboot Pirates. Some fans have said that if Depp’s not back for Pirates, they will boycott it altogether.
Jeanne du Barry is Johnny’s Depp’s first role since 2020’s Minamata which only made $1.7 million on a budget of $11-13 million.
As for Johnny’s next move, there’s only one animated project listed on IMDB. Amber Heard doesn’t have any new projects listed which could indicate all the press from the trial may have done some damage.
