Fans of the film Blow should make sure to sign up for a Fandor account, as a new five-part docuseries is coming out based on the man that inspired the famous Johnny Depp film. Boston George: Famous Without the Fortune will give a more in-depth look into the life and story of the drug trafficker and smuggler George Jacob Jung. Check out the trailer for the series below:
If you remember Blow, it featured Johnny Depp playing Jung in his cocaine trafficking days. Many consider it to be one of Depp’s best films, with a cast that includes Penelope Cruz, Franka Potente, Rachel Griffiths, Ethan Suplee, Paul Reubens, Jordi Molla, Cliff Curtis, Miguel Sandoval, and even the late Ray Liotta. Ted Demme directed the film with a screenplay by David McKenna and Nick Cassavetes. It was based on the book Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellín Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All by Bruce Porter.
Boston George: Famous Without the Fortune will feature extensive interviews with the man himself, as he recounts what his life was like when he was smuggling cocaine to the US from Colombia in the 1970s and 1980s. Jung worked with Carlos Leader to smuggle cocaine from Pablo Escobar’s Colombian Medellin Cartel. Eventually, Jung was arrested and sentenced to 70 years in prison in 1994. He was released in 2014. In the trailer for the docuseries, you see many of the people Jung met throughout his life, including Bruce Porter, his friend Waino “Tuna” Tuominen, his partner Ronda Clay Spinello, and former undercover DEA agent Tom Tinnerington and DEA Special Agent Mike McManus who busted Jung for his crimes. Johnny Depp can also be seen throughout the trailer, and there is even a behind-the-scenes clip available where Depp gifts Jung a phone for them to stay in touch.
Boston George: Famous Without the Fortune is produced by Georgette Angelos and Chris Chesson. The series has been in production for a few years, facing delays from the passing of Jung in 2021 and the pandemic. Now the series is finally coming to fruition and will be available on the Fandor streaming service on July 22. It will air a new episode every Friday after the premiere, with the episodes being made available on TVOD the following day. Boston George: Famous Without the Fortune will be the first Johnny Depp project we’ve seen since his highly publicized trial with Amber Heard. The verdict of the trial found both actors liable for defamation, with Depp being awarded more damages than Heard. The trial and their ongoing turmoil have been in the public eye for a long time, with Johnny Depp being removed from both the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in recent years.
Johnny Depp’s next film project will be Jeanne du Barry. Jeanne du Barry is a period piece about Louis XV and one of his mistresses. Depp will be starring as Louis XV and Maiwenn will be playing the titular role, in addition to directing.
