Fantastic Beasts 3 has seen several major setbacks already. There have been regular controversies associated with the film. One such issue was the casting of Johnny Depp. In one of the more famous cases of cancel culture, the star who played Gellert Grindelwald for the franchise was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen. Now, the Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer has dropped, finally giving fans their first look at the new actor taking on the role.

There is a whole more happening in the Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer than the absence of Johnny Depp. Yet, that’s still going to be a major focus for fans. If you weren’t sure when you saw Grindelwald’s replacement, you can see Mads Mikkelsen in character below.
The Secrets of Dumbledore trailer starts off with a look at Hogwarts. Then the video shows a look at Richard Harris as Dumbledore. The actor played Dumbledore in the earliest Harry Potter films. Then Jude Law as the younger Dumbledore is shown, looking pensive as he gazes out at the campus grounds. He’s a man full of secrets, Dumbledore. The Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer shows a wide look at all of the characters involved in the movie. It takes a while to show Mads Mikkelsen replacing Johnny Depp, and though it slows down to give audiences a good look at him, it doesn’t draw too much attention to the character.
Ezra Miller is also shown as Credence Barebone. Like Johnny Depp, the actor also suffered a major controversy prior to filming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. The actor, who also played Flash for the DC Extended Universe, allegedly choked a fan in a bar. The incident was caught on video. There was some outcry to remove him from the film, but he’s still seen in the new trailer.
While Johnny Depp was asked to resign from Fantastic Beasts 3, his replacement didn’t cost him financially. His contract protected him. He resigned from the movie but got to keep his $16 million salary. For the studio, this meant they lost Depp and paid another actor to take on the role, costing them money. It would seem that means the studio felt they may have lost more from audiences boycotting Depp. The star has accused the industry of boycotting him following his divorce from Amber Heard, which has been complicated by allegations of abuse.
Meanwhile, many fans of the Wizarding World franchise continue to call for boycotts of all Harry Potter-related material. With Johnny Depp in the past for the franchise, the focus is on author JK Rowling, who has a history of comments many have alleged are transphobic.
While the controversies continue to dominate the conversation, that isn’t stopping the movie from happening, as the Fantastic Beasts 3 trailer shows. Fans can expect more magic, more Hogwarts, and more information about Albus Dumbledore’s past. Secrets of Dumbledore releases in movie theaters on April 15, 2022.
