Filming a pirate movie in frigid British weather means the cast and crew might get cold. Thanks to Johnny Depp, however, the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was kept nice and warm by their intrepid Captain Jack Sparrow. Film Facts reports and LAD Bible confirms that the television and movie star bought coats for everyone in the cast and crew, spending over £40,000, or $75,000.

The actor’s generosity was noted by both crewmembers and fellow castmates, some of whom ensured they kept the gift as much for its sentimental value as for its warmth. For example, Kevin McNally, the actor who played Mr. Gibbs in the movies, has been outspoken about Johnny Depp’s generosity on the Pirates set, adding that he also bought wallets for everyone that were emblazoned with the same tattoo the Captain Sparrow actor wears on his arm. McNally also confirmed that Geoffrey Rush, who plays Captain Barbossa in the series, also bought the entire cast black pearls to commemorate the ship that the pirates sail.

Many fans were not surprised by Johnny Depp being willing to spend money on gifts for his castmates and the people filming his movie. Some were more than happy to praise the actor for his leadership on the set as well as in front of the camera. They recognized his generosity and character displayed in the gift.

Others were not as quick to praise Johnny Depp for the Pirates series or anything else, in response to allegations made by his ex-wife, Amber Heard. The messy divorce between the two stars dredged up accusations of domestic abuse, substance abuse, alcohol abuse, and disruptive behavior. While Johnny Depp has his share of supporters, so does Amber Heard, and her voice was heard through the protests of her fans.

Fortunately, the majority of Twitter users who responded to the thread were supportive and positive in their posts, praising Johnny Depp for making the purchase and gifting the garments during the shoot of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. As one user pointed out, it is almost certain that everyone on set already had coats, but the point lies in his willingness to give the gift to everyone, from the director and cinematographer to the people who perform the most marginal tasks. A willingness to pay respect to everyone on the set is the mark of an actor who knows he is a small part of a much larger team.

Many of the people making negative comments assumed that the movie was shot during the turbulent period when Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were at the height of their discord, but Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released in 2011 before the two were married. This is not proof for or against either of them, but it does show that she was not an influence in his life at the time. Prior to his marriage to Amber Heard, the actor was known for a gentle and generous demeanor, and it is clear that he and Amber Heard were a very toxic combination.

However, he still has fans of his own and the thread from Film Facts brought them all out to celebrate Johnny Depp and all things Pirates in praise of Captain Jack Sparrow.
