The Johnny Depp and Amber Heard saga has played out like a bad movie so far with calls to the police, court proceedings, Hollywood movie recastings, rumors of franchise firings, lawsuits, and more surrounding these two for the better part of the last couple of years. And now, those stories are actually going to be made into a movie. Deadline is reporting that Discovery+ is going to be producing and releasing a documentary about the (literal and figurative) trials and tribulations these two have been going through.
Though it doesn’t appear that either Johnny Depp or Amber Heard are going to be directly involved in this new documentary, the flick will feature interviews with a number of people close to the situation. Those will include lawyers and it will also use archival footage of the two’s tumultuous relationship. Tentatively titled, Johnny vs. Amber, the two-part documentary will break down along the couple’s lines, with each part focusing on either Depp’s or Heard’s side of the story.
While neither Johnny Depp nor Amber Heard were interviewed for the documentary series, there is plenty out there in the public sphere to begin piecing together aspects of their marriage and the fallout that ensued when they decided to get a divorce. Much has been made of their relationship over the last couple of years with the toxicity playing out in a highly-publicized court trial in the summer of 2020. While the celebrity nature of their relationship was, of course, going to put them in the public eye, it was these court proceedings that really gave a window into what was happening behind the scenes. And it wasn’t good.
In 2020, Johnny Depp went to open court in a trial that had him suing the British tabloid The Sun over the publication referring to Depp as a “wife-beater” in his marriage to Amber Heard. Suing for defamation and libel, Depp’s team was seeking huge damages. But in their defense The Sun had to prove their case in court, providing evidence that their assertion was, in fact, accurate. In the end, Depp lost the case and the fallout was swift and brutal for the actor. He was fired from his role in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise as well as the coming reboot of Pirates of the Caribbean.
As for Amber Heard, though some fans have wanted it to be the case, she hasn’t had the same career downslide as Johnny Depp. While it was rumored she might be on the outs for the upcoming Aquaman sequel, that ended up not being the case and she’ll make a return as Queen Mera in that franchise. But more news on this front could be on the way. There is another case scheduled that will have these two at the center. Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard in Virginia over an op-ed she published in the Washington Post that details abuse she suffered in a relationship. She doesn’t name Depp specifically, but it appears she is talking about their relationship. Depp is suing for defamation.
Johnny vs. Amber could provide insight into their relationship and, if it sticks to the description, will give both sides of the story. There is yet to be a clear timeline for when it will release on Discovery+.
