John Williams is one of the most legendary scorers of all time. He is responsible for the music that has brought such classic cinema to life including Star Wars, Jurassic Park, E.T., Superman, Harry Potter, and so much more. The man just turned 90 in February, and he is continuing his journey in pushing forward the art of music, which is sensational considering most retire around the age of 60. Recently, Williams spoke about his body of work, especially regarding working on Indiana Jones 5. He joked about Harrison Ford retiring, and he would potentially do so too. According to Williams, “At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford — who’s quite a bit younger than I am — I think has announced will be his last film,” Williams says. “So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
Harrison Ford has not formally announced that he is retiring from acting. Indiana Jones 5 might be his final film appearance, but that has not been made public or reported at all. He is set to appear alongside Helen Mirren in a spinoff series for Yellowstone. However, John Williams might be using that rumor to spearhead his own retirement. He is not stopping himself from making music, but he may be stepping away from scoring films. He stated that scoring a Star Wars film, for example, takes six months of work. That is a lengthy amount of time that might be taking away from his want to pursue his own original music. Retiring for that reason makes a ton of sense for the man, especially since he is 90 years old.
John Williams is dedicating himself to making his own music, as he is currently composing concert music of his own, which refers to a piano concerto he is writing for Emanuel Ax. He did also release a live album of concertos with famous cellist, Yo-Yo Ma. Ma spoke about his love for Williams. Ma said, “He is one of the greatest American voices.” That is certainly true, as the man’s resume speaks for itself. He has been part of nearly every iconic hit film since the 1970s. He will go down as the greatest movie composer of all time as well. Although we would surely miss his iconic movie scores, we understand why the man is wanting to take a break.
Though you may not be familiar immediately with John Williams, you might have found yourself humming “The Imperial March” or the Jurassic Park theme song. Even more famous now is the iconic Harry Potter theme song. That was all bore from the mind of Williams. He truly is the greatest film composer.
John Williams might be contemplating retirement, but at least we are going to see his work one final time. Indiana Jones 5 is set to debut in theaters on June 30th, 2023. That means we are just a year shy of being able to hear one of his final film offerings. We hope that he does take some time to work on his own material, and maybe he will allow himself an additional movie or two in the future. Either way, he has earned his time to relax. Thank you for giving us some of the most iconic music that has ever graced film screens.
