John Wick’s The Continental Spin-Off Show Won’t Be A Normal Series
John Wick's The Continental spin-off will have three 90-minute episodes that are all part of “one continuation.”
Even though John Wick: Chapter 4 earned a massive $73.5 million at the box office over the weekend, there’s no word on when the film’s titular character will return to the big screen for a fifth outing. Fortunately, Lionsgate has been hard at work developing several spin-off projects that take place in the world of assassins that John Wick inhabits, including the miniseries The Continental and the movie Ballerina. While a release date for the Ana de Armas-led spin-off film has yet to be announced, Erica Lee, who serves as a producer on The Continental, told Collider that the prequel series will premiere on Peacock later this year.
In addition to the show’s release date, Lee revealed that the John Wick spin-off series will have three 90-minute episodes that are all part of “one continuation.” In other words, there won’t be a time jump between installments. All three episodes will be set in New York City in 1970.
The upcoming series is just one of several spinoff projects that will expand on the John Wick universe. The show centers around the enigmatic hotel known as The Continental, which serves as a safe haven for assassins. The series will explore the origins of the hotel and its strict rules while also introducing a new protagonist who must navigate the dangerous world of assassins while being hunted by various factions.
Back in 2021, it was announced that Chris Collins, who previously worked on the hit show The Wire, was developing The Continental. After hearing multiple pitches from different creative teams, however, Lionsgate settled on the approach presented by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons. The former two have also been tapped to serve as showrunners on the John Wick spin-off series.
It probably goes without saying that The Continental has generated a lot of excitement among John Wick fans, and it’s expected to be a massive hit when it arrives. The series will provide a deeper look into the world of John Wick and will expand the franchise in new and exciting ways. Starring Mel Gibson, Colin Woodell, Peter Greene, Nhung Kate, Katie McGrath, and Jessica Allain, the series will stream exclusively on Peacock this September.
Meanwhile, the Len Wiseman-directed Ballerina is currently in post-production. The forthcoming spinoff movie, which is set in the John Wick universe, follows a young female assassin who seeks revenge against those who killed her family. The film stars Lance Reddick, Ana De Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Norman Reedus, Gabriel Bryne, Anjelica Huston, and Anne Parillaud.
While you wait in excitement to see how Lionsgate expands the John Wick franchise beyond its original movie format, John Wick: Chapter 4 is now playing in theaters. The film follows the titular character, who faces off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes. Directed by Chad Stahelski, the sequel stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, George Georgiou, Lance Reddick, Clancy Brown, Ian McShane, Marko Zaror, Bill Skarsgard, Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, and Rina Sawayama.
