Mel Gibson’s John Wick Spin-Off Prequel Gets An Awesome First Look
The trailer to the John Wick spin-off The Continental is full of action and 1970s fashion.
The John Wick franchise continues to grow with the upcoming Peacock series The Continental. The series will star Mel Gibson along with younger versions of Ian McShane’s Winston and Lance Reddick’s Charon. Check out the 1970s-set trailer below to get your first look at the show:
Visually, the John Wick prequel series The Continental looks well in line with the franchise as a whole. Of course, it will be missing Keanu Reeves since this is set far before we meet Baba Yaga himself in the 2014 film. Instead, Mel Gibson will have a starring role we’ll be learning more about the hotel assassin network, specifically the New York location.
The John Wick franchise has introduced us to many colorful characters, and it seems like The Continental will act as an origin story of sorts for some of them. Mel Gibson’s Cormac character remains mysterious, but we did get a glimpse of Colin Woodell’s younger version of Winston. It’ll be interesting to see how he seizes control of the titular hotel and becomes the manager.
The John Wick prequel series The Continental will also star Ayomide Adegun as a young Charon, Peter Greene as Uncle Charlie, Mel Gibson as Cormac, Ben Robson as Frankie, Hubert Point-Du Jour as Miles, Jessica Allain as Lou, Mishel Prada as KD and Nhung Kate as Yen. The series is co-created by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons with Coolidge and Ward also filling the writer and showrunner roles. The series will be a three-part event with Albert Hughes directing the first and third parts and Charlotte Brandstrom directing the second.
John Wick fans are having a great year, as the fourth movie in the franchise is currently in theaters and The Continental is coming later this year. Not only that, but the massive critical and box office success of the fourth film means that the studios likely won’t want to slow down the faucet of content anytime soon. If the Mel Gibson-led series also becomes a hit, we could very well see more plans for TV content in the future too.
Although there’s no telling when exactly we might see the next mainline John Wick film, we know that we’re getting another spin-off outside of The Continental. Ana de Armas will be leading her own spin-off film titled Ballerina, which will feature de Armas as an assassin out to avenge her family. Along with the Mel Gibson series, that means there are three potential avenues for more Wick content.
It’s easy to see how the John Wick universe could continue to expand, especially with fans more than willing to pay for more content and tune in for events like The Continental. Adding stars like Mel Gibson and Ana de Armas to the franchise is definitely a good move as well. Although we can hope for it, Keanu obviously won’t want to do the franchise forever.
You can catch John Wick: Chapter 4 in theaters now and look out for The Continental in September. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more about Mel Gibson’s character and other potential plot details. In the meantime, make sure to check out the trailer again in case you missed anything.
