Character actors are a special breed of performers. They may often be featured in films and television, racking up IMDB credits for many years before anyone even knows their name. Some of the most talented ones can break out into starring roles, creating a space for their craft in specific genres and quality programming. Lance Reddick is one such character actor, as he has navigated the realms of TV series and films with much grace and depth. Moving from popular shows like The Wire to the newest Netflix take on Resident Evil, Reddick is a true talent. Now, the John Wick actor has signed on to appear in a new thriller called Apteros.
Fans of Lance Reddick might be delighted to learn about Apteros and this physiological space thriller from the team behind Shuttle and Mr. Malcolm’s List. Written and directed by Edward Anderson, Variety reports that Apteros is about a futuristic space crew and their artificial intelligence tool that travel to Mars to research and locate bacterial life that may have been found. As shooting will begin this fall in Hungary, Reddick will be a far cry from his John Wick days as Charon the hotel manager as he will soon embody Captain Mitchell, leading his crew of seven astronauts that currently includes actors Kaya Scodelario of The Maze Runner fame, as well as Bohemian Rhapsody’s Ben Hardy. The rest of the cast has yet to be announced.
Now of course something must happen to an ensemble cast in a psychological thriller set in space in order to grab the attention of global audiences. Apteros gets its name from the spaceship that Captain Mitchell is piloting, and the space crew will have to try to figure out what is happening to their ship when they are suddenly hurled across space into a nosedive. Little is known about the rest of the plot at this time, but IMDB also states that the crew may find themselves on separate sides as they attempt to save their mission and Earth as a whole. One may wish John Wick himself was aboard to save the day, but we will just have to wait and see how this pans out.
Lance Reddick has had a storied career that has spanned work in television, movies, and video games. No stranger to the science fiction genre, Reddick appeared on all five seasons of the critically acclaimed J.J. Abrams show Fringe as Phillip Broyles, as well as stints on Lost and voicing the character of Sylens in the video games Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. Taking his talents to the silver screen, Reddick recently costarred in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, and can be seen in all three John Wick films. He will soon be joining Keanu Reeves again in the upcoming fourth installment of the action thriller franchise, which has concluded filming and is set to be released in March 2023. Currently, Reddick is the narrator on Netflix’s conspiracy theory series America’s Book of Secrets, taking over narrating duties from American actor Jonathan Adams.
