A familiar face has officially signed on to reprise his role in the fourth installment of the John Wick franchise.
Deadline reports that Lance Reddick will reprise his role as New York’s most dedicated concierge, Charon, in John Wick 4, Fans may remember Charon from the previous films as a very loyal ally to Keanu Reeves’ soft-spoken, reluctant hitman character. The first movie saw him look after John while he was on the grounds of the Continental Hotel in New York, where there is notoriously no business conducted.
The sequel deepened their friendship even further when John was forced to leave his new dog behind, trusting him to the care of Charon who agreed to look after the pooch as a personal favor given that the hotel does not offer pet services. Their partnership deepened even further in Parabellum when his employer, Winston (played by Ian McShane) was targeted for assassination. John and Charon beat back a heavily armored hit squad in an all-night battle for supremacy at the hotel. However, that fight ended in a way that could put Charon at odds with his friend in John Wick 4.
After forcing their opposition to suffer heavy casualties, the High Table agrees to let Winston back in, provided he kills John. Charon watches helplessly as Winston shoots Wick off a building. While he’s loyal to his employer, Charon seems somewhat delighted when it’s discovered later that Wick survived. However, Wick seemingly declares war on Winston and the High Table at the end of the movie, meaning Charon will likely have to choose sides in John Wick 4.
“Lance has been part of the franchise since the very beginning and has had an integral role in shaping the world of John Wick,” John Wick 4 director Chad Stahelski told the outlet in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited to be working with him again.”
Reddick’s pre-existing character is a welcomed addition to John Wick 4 given that the movie seems filled to the brim with exciting new characters such as martial arts experts Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins. While the franchise is known for its stunning gunplay sequences, the third movie’s climax ditched the firearms in favor of showing off Reeves’ Jiu-Jitsu and Judo skills. The inclusion of A-list martial artists like Yen and Adkins certainly implies that the fourth movie plans to double down on the fisticuffs.
Other new additions to the cast include Hiroyuki Sanada, Rina Sawayama, and Shamier Anderson. Unfortunately, precious little is known about what to expect from these newcomers. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t clues out there. For example, Collider reports that Anderson appeared in a video showing off his preparation for the film, including weapons training as well as stage combat. Unfortunately, that doesn’t reveal whether he and the others will be a friend or a foe to everyone’s favorite relentless killing machine in John Wick 4.
It would make sense for John Wick 4 to look to expand the already vast world of the franchise. In addition to a fourth and fifth installment on the way, the minds behind the series are hard at work crafting both a TV show called The Continental as well as a spin-off film centered on a female assassin titled Ballerina, according to Entertainment Weekly.
As for what to expect from John Wick 4 after his defeat in Parabellum, fans will simply have to wait until the finished product arrives after its planned release date in May of 2022.
