While some have been pining for John Krasinski to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a fan-favorite character, that hasn’t exactly played all the way out yet. In the meantime, we are going to get him in another wildly popular role, this one quite iconic in nature. He’s set to voice the character of Superman in an upcoming movie that has some other huge names involved. John Krasinski will play the Kryptonian in the animated movie DC League of Super-Pets. He joins a massive cast and took to Twitter to lay out the good news.
In a simple post from this Twitter account, John Krasinki confirmed that he would be joining Dwayne Johnson and others in this new movie, set for a May 2022 release. In this first image for his character, Superman is seen flying alongside Krypto the Superdog in a story about what happens when our greatest heroes also have pets in their lives. Check out the tweet from Krasinski celebrating the news and calling this a “buddy movie”.
DC League of Super-Pets is about the different pets in the lives of our favorite DC superheroes, mostly the group that makes up the original form of the Justice League. With John Krasinski and Dwayne Johnson taking the lead as Superman and Krypto respectively, the movie set quite the baseline with its stars. But there are other huge names included as well. Kevin Hart will voice Ace the Bat-Hound, Batman’s trusty canine. There’s also Natasha Lyonne playing Merton the turtle that, of course, belongs to The Flash. Diego Luna is Chip, the Green Lantern’s pet squirrel. And Vanessa Bayer is PB, Wonder Woman’s pet pig. Marc Maron has also been tapped to voice the primary villain in Lex Luthor. Kate McKinnon and Keanu Reeves are apparently joining the cast as well though their roles haven’t been disclosed yet.
In terms of voice actors for an animated production, this movie has about as star-studded a lineup as you will find. This group is among the A-lister’s A-list. John Krasinski not being among the most popular among the group really tells you something about what kind of talent they’ve brought in for the production. The flick has originally supposed to have hit the big screen last May, but pandemic-related shutdowns put a halt on that and it was pushed back a full year.
Of course, John Krasinski playing an animated version of Superman isn’t quite the superhero casting news some have been waiting for when it comes to the actor. He’s long been rumored to be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Reed Richards when the Fantastic Four finally gets their big-screen reboot treatment in the MCU. Fans have wanted Krasinski to play the role of Reed Richards alongside his wife Emily Blunt as Susan Storm. That hasn’t been anything more than rumor/ hype at this point, but there have been more than a few rumblings that it could happen.
For the time being, we’ll have to settle for John Krasinski playing this other superhero, one quite a bit more popular, but also only just animated. With only Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series currently in his production timeline, we could be on the verge of big announcements for other upcoming Krasinski roles.
