John Cena’s inclusion in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (not to be confused with David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad ) may turn out to be one of the highlights of the new film. The highly anticipated sequel looks bonkers, and it looks like Gunn brought his A-game to both his direction and his script. To make it all even sweeter, it looks like Cena himself is also having a blast playing his character, Peacemaker, a killer whom the actor called “a douchey Captain America.“
Now, it does not seem like John Cena wants to be rid of his Peacemaker costume. During a recent appearance on NBA on TNT Post-Game Show (via Wrestling Inc.), Cena could be seen sporting the character’s bright get-up and confident smile in what was probably – no, definitely – a marketing move for The Suicide Squad. And because he is currently filming that Peacemaker spin-off in Vancouver. That should get fans more excited for both projects, which was undoubtedly by design.
Here is a clip of John Cena’s interview on NBA on TNT Post-Game Show:
This is a great interview, and hopefully it does more than simply entertain sports fans. John Cena knows that The Suicide Squad might be a tough sell for some, especially after the critical failure of its ill-fated predecessor. So, he is doing his best to remind his fans that the film is coming and that it is wildly different than everything that has come before it.
The Suicide Squad dropped its first trailer last week, wowing fans with its mix of offbeat humor, quirky characters, and a surprising villain that fans of the comics will be thrilled to see. John Cena looks to be a big part of the film, standing tall alongside Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, King Shark, and the other prominent members of this ragtag group of no-gooders.
John Cena joins a cast that includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi. That is one heck of a lineup, and It will be super exciting to see each of their characters in action. Hopefully, Gunn can deliver a story that’s as fun as his first Guardians of the Galaxy movie so immediately was.
The origins of John Cena’s character stretch back to 1966, when Peacemaker was owned by Charlton Comics before DC Comics acquired the rights to him in the 1980s. The Peacemaker mantle has been taken up by multiple people throughout the character’s history, but The Suicide Squad is going with the Christopher Smith version of the ruthless killer.
You can catch John Cena in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad when it hits theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on August 6, 2021. The film looks brutal, fun, and absolutely nuts in every conceivable way, and will undoubtedly be a marked improvement over David Ayer’s 2016 film. Until then, you can hold yourself over by watching him in the hilarious comedy Blockers, the upcoming Fast and the Furious 9, and any of the other great roles he has played in recent years.
