John Cena Confirms Whether Peacemaker Is Being Recast Too
Even after many studio shakeups, John Cena will continue to play Peacemaker in the DCU.
Since James Gunn and Peter Safran were appointed co-heads of the newly formed DC Studios, there have been several massive shakeups, to say the least. Following the recent announcements that Henry Cavill will no longer play Superman, and Dwayne Johnson is out as Black Adam for the foreseeable future, fans have been wondering about other characters. Fortunately, Cosmic Book News has confirmation that John Cena will continue to portray Peacemaker going forward thanks to a recent appearance by the actor on WWE Smackdown.
John Cena shocked viewers when he appeared on the program last Friday. He revealed that his long-time friend Kevin Owens sent him a text message out of the blue insisting the wrestler-turned-actor be his tag team partner on Smackdown on December 30 in Tampa, Florida. What’s interesting is that Owens addressed him as Peacemaker, and considering the program is mostly scripted, it’s safe to assume the reference to the fan-favorite character was intentional.
The Suicide Squad was released in 2021, which marked the first appearance by John Cena as Peacemaker. Fans instantly fell in love with the pacifist diplomat, and a spin-off series was announced to be in development for HBO Max shortly after the film’s release. At one point, Viola Davis, whose Amanda Waller character served as the glue that tied the now-defunct DCEU together, had her own spin-off show in the works. But with the recent changes under Gunn and Safran, the fate of the series is now up in the air.
Considering James Gunn helmed The Suicide Squad after jumping ship to DC following his termination by Marvel, it would come as no surprise to anyone to see John Cena, Margot Robbie, and other actors from the film pop up in future DC projects. It’s also worth noting that the filmmaker’s wife, Jennifer Holland, had a significant role as Agent Emilia Harcourt in the movie, and she returned as the character in Peacemaker. Gunn created the series and serves as showrunner, and even with all the adjustments being made to the DC Universe, a second season is reportedly in active development.
Although the news that John Cena will continue to portray Peacemaker in future DC projects is certainly exciting, fans are still heartbroken after learning that several actors from the Snyderverse will not appear in the DC Universe going forward. In fact, the filmmaker recently found himself taking to social media to address the disrespectful remarks he’s received from fans following the news that stars like Henry Cavill and Dwayne Johnson would not be reprising their respective roles in future DC projects.
With various changes still undoubtedly underway, Gunn may as well prepare himself for more backlash as details about his 10-year plan continue to come to light.
Still, fans can rejoice in knowing that some actors from the Snyderverse have been spared. In addition to John Cena moving forward in his Peacemaker role, Zachary Levi recently teased that his future as Shazam is also secure. As Gunn and Safran continue to map out DC’s upcoming slate of movies, there are bound to be more surprising announcements headed our way in the near future.
