John Carpenter Scoring Jenna Ortega/Paul Rudd Dark Comedy
Bloody Disgusting dropped the scoop on A24’s newest dark comedy Death of a Unicorn and legend John Carpenter’s involvement in the making of the movie. Though there aren’t a whole lot of details that have been leaked regarding the film, we do know that John Carpenter is set to compose the music, alongside Cody Carpenter (John Carpenter’s son) and Daniel Davies.
Halloween Composer John Carpenter Is Working On Death Of A Unicorn
For those who don’t know of the excellence that is John Carpenter, he composed the music for the original Halloween (1978), Halloween II, and Halloween III, and returned as composer for the Halloween sequels in the 2018 remake of the original film, Halloween Kills (2021), and Halloween Ends (2022).
Of course, John Carpenter is responsible for other great works as well. He was a composer for The Fog (1980), The Thing (1982), Escape from New York (1981), and Starman (1984) just to name a few of his earlier works. Overall, he has worked on more than 24 different movies/soundtracks.
Paul Rudd Joins Jenna Ortega In The Dark Comedy
In addition to the music of John Carpenter, Death of a Unicorn will star Paul Rudd (This is the End, Ant-Man) and Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) as a father-daughter pair. Ari Aster (Beau is Afraid) will produce the film and Alex Scharfman (Resurrection) will direct Death of a Unicorn.
Other stars cast in the new dark comedy include Tea Leoni (Jurassic Park III), Will Poulter (We’re the Millers), Anthony Carrigan (Gotham), Sunita Mani (Save Yourselves!), Jessica Hynes (Son of Rambow, Shaun of the Dead), and Stephen Park (Fargo, Ghosted).
Rudd And Ortega Both Serve As Executive Producers
If all of those stars and John Carpenter’s involvement in the music composition for the movie are not enough to pique your interest, Larry Fong (Kong: Skull Island, 300) will lead as director of photography on the film. Amy Williams (Little America) will be the Production Designer, and Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega will serve as executive producers of the movie.
Paul Rudd Is Playing Ortega’s Character’s Father
The premise of Death of a Unicorn centers around the father-daughter pair, Elliot (Rudd) and Ridley (Ortega). While heading to a corporate retreat with Elliot’s billionaire boss (Richard Grant, whose career has spanned film, television, and video games over more than 30 years), the pair accidentally strike a unicorn with their vehicle.
Unfortunately, the hit killed the unicorn and Elliot’s boss wants to use its remains to find monetary benefits using its miraculous healing properties. The dark comedy crosses over with a bit of fantasy worked into the plot and the combination of Ari Aster and John Carpenter will likely mean the film leans heavier in that direction once it is finished.
The Film Is In Post-Production, But No Release Date Is Set
Death of a Unicorn is definitely on its way to being finished too. The movie was granted a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement that allowed the filmmakers to continue working on the movie throughout the strike, and Death of a Unicorn wrapped this summer.
The movie is now in post-production and should be finished soon. Though there is no release date on the calendar, John Carpenter fans shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to dive into the film and the music that comes along with it.
