Joaquin Phoenix And Lady Gaga Stun In New Joker 2 Look
Joker: Folie a Deux director Todd Phillips decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving us our best look yet of everyone’s favorite toxic couple. Captioning his Instagram post, “Hoping your day is full of love,” we got looks at Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in costume as Joker and Harley Quinn. Of course, he also made sure to include the release date of Joker 2, which is October 4.
Arkham Is For Lovers
The Instagram post shows us a couple of good looks of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in the face paint and costume he donned in 2019’s Joker. Lady Gaga’s looks, comparatively, are more subtle as her Harley Quinn is seen in a white dress and a flowery blouse. We also get to see the two sharing an intimate moment through the bars of Arkham Asylum, where the two presumably fall in love in Joker 2.
Falling For Her Patient
At the end of Joker, we saw Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck/Joker taken to Arkham. If Joker 2 is following Harley Quinn’s origin story that was first seen in Batman: The Animated Series, then Lady Gaga’s Harleen Quinzel will be introduced as Joker’s psychologist. However, she ends up falling for the Clown Prince of Crime rather than fixing him.
Joker 2’s Cast
Along with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Joker 2 will see Zazie Beetz reprising her role from the first film, along with newcomers Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey.
The Original Was A Runaway Hit
Joker was an unexpected and shocking success when it was released in 2019. The film grossed over $1 billion at the global box office and became the highest-grossing R-rated box office release.
Not only did Joker generate a ton of cash, but the film also earned 11 Oscar nominations and netted Joaquin Phoenix a win for Best Actor. Needless to say, Joker 2 has a lot of expectations on it. It also reportedly has musical elements, and it will be the only DC film being released this year.
Creative Reset
This seems to be the trend for the major superhero film companies, as both DC and Marvel are doing a sort of creative reset. Marvel is banking on Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman to bring MCU fans back into the fold with Deadpool and Wolverine in July. Meanwhile, DC is likely hoping that Joaquin Phoenix can bring in over $1 billion again, especially with the help of Lady Gaga.
Elseworlds
For those confused about the existence of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn alongside the iterations played by Barry Keoghan in The Batman and Margot Robbie in multiple previous DC films, Joker 2 will be part of the DC Elseworlds banner of films. These films exist outside of the connected storyline James Gunn and Peter Safran plan to kick off with Superman: Legacy in 2025. This means that directors like Todd Philips and Matt Reeves will be free to make their films without worrying about the ongoing storylines in the main DCU.
2024 Is A Big Superhero Movie Year
With both Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker 2 being blockbuster R-rated releases, it will be interesting to see which can rake in the most cash. Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26. You can catch Joker: Folie a Deux on October 4.
