Jim Carrey Out Of Retirement, Returns To Most Unlikely Role
Jim Carrey may have announced his retirement from movie-making two years ago, but it seems the making of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is enough to entice him back to the big screen. Reprising his villainous Dr. Robotnik role, Carrey will return to acting to give our blue hero a run for his money in the newest sequel.
Jim Carrey Is Back As Dr. Robotnik
Though Jim Carrey and the director of Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Jeff Fowler, have not yet made any public statements regarding the actor’s return to the screen, X’s official Sonic The Hedgehog account has repeatedly teased Carrey’s return with a brief snippet featuring the signature laugh of Dr. Robotnik (aka Eggman).
Jim Carrey Gave Himself Wiggle Room To Return
When Jim Carrey announced in April of 2022 that Sonic The Hedgehog 2 would be his last movie, no one imagined a Sonic The Hedgehog 3 would be enough to bring the comedian back to film.
However, in the interview where Carrey announced his retirement, his declaration did sound a bit malleable. His exact words were, “Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious”.
The Seriousness Of His Retirement Was Immediatly Questionable
When further questioned about the seriousness of his statement, he said, “It depends. You know, if the angels bring some sort of, you know, a script that’s, you know, written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break”.
Jim Carrey Loves Playing Robotnik
Yet the news is as official as it can be. Jim Carrey will make a return as Dr. Eggman Robotnik in the new Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie. Clearly, the return of Eggman and the possible emergence of Shadow Sonic were important enough to bring Jim back to work.
Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Left It Possible For Robotnik’s Return
If you’re a fan of the Sonic movies, you’ll know that at the end of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik fell from a huge robot to the ground, possibly dying from the fall. If you watched the post-credit scene, you saw that Robotnik’s body was never found, leaving the storyline open to his possible return.
Jim Carrey’s Biggest Box Office Success
Why wouldn’t Jim Carrey return for Sonic The Hedgehog 3? The first two Sonic films grossed more than $870 million globally at the box office. The comedic actor stands to gather a healthy payday from the new sequel.
Paramount Studios is also invested in the continuation of the Sonic saga. The studio is already working on a new spin-off called Knuckles to premiere exclusively on Paramount+.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Speeds Into Theaters This Year
Jim Carrey’s Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is set to open in theaters in the United States on December 20, 2024. Jeff Fowler will return as director of the film (Fowler directed the first two films as well), and Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno will be producers.
While you’re waiting to see what Jim Carrey does with Dr. Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, you can catch the first Sonic movie streaming on Paramount+ with a subscription to the channel. It’s a family-friendly movie with a ‘PG’ rating, so get the kids together on the couch for a fun evening of speed and adventure.
