Jerry Seinfeld Unfrosted Trailer Is A Hilarious First Look At The Origin Of Pop-Tarts
Jerry Seinfeld’s post-Seinfeld career has seen some odd choices, from big hits like Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee to splendid failures like The Bee Movie. There’s no way to know which of those camps Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story will be, but it is undeniably another strange project. The comedic retelling of a breakfast food’s origin is as far from a guaranteed blockbuster as possible, but Seinfeld may pull it off.
The trailer for Unfrosted presents the movie as a half-period piece parody and half-slapstick comedy. It’s the sort of tone that a comedian of Jerry Seinfeld’s caliber could make into a delightful comedy, taking its subject matter just serious enough to work as irony. The over-the-top rocket launch ex shot of a pop-tart being toasted is exactly the tone Unfrosted needs if it’s going to work.

As the star of one of the most important sitcoms of all time, Jerry Seinfeld is a titan of the comedy world which is why his involvement makes Unfrosted so interesting.
Not only will he be the lead in the movie, but he will be directing Unfrosted. In fact, Unfrosted will be Jerry Seinfeld’s debut as a feature film director, his experience being limited to comedy specials and an episode of his show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

While it may seem odd for such a successful star to be making a movie about Pop-Tarts, the movie started as a joke in the comedian’s stand-up set. The opportunity to turn a stand-up bit into a feature-length film is likely part of what led Jerry Seinfeld to become so heavily involved in Unfrosted. It’s also part of a larger deal Netflix signed with the comedian, which includes other projects and the right to stream Seinfeld.

Unfrosted also features a star-studded cast of comedians and actors. Joining Jerry Seinfeld in the movie are Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, Max Greenfield, Christian Slater, Bill Burr, Daniel Levy, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Thomas Lennon, Bobby Moynihan, Adrian Martinez, Sarah Cooper, and Fred Armisen.
With such a talented cast, fans will surely have at least one caste member they love.
The film’s writers have worked together in the past. Berry Marder, Spike Feresten, and Andy Robin co-wrote The Bee Movie with Jerry Seinfeld and all four are now working together as writers on Unfrosted. Ferestena and Robin were also writers on Seinfeld, making their writing relationship with Seinfeld several decades old.
The Netflix original will be lampooning serious period pieces about the 60s. The trailer’s 1960s style, narration, and historical costuming help the otherwise silly movie feel distinct from other comedies. While it would be easy for the movie to be a glorified, multi-hour commercial for Pop-Tarts it looks like Jerry Seinfeld and company use that premise to build out an absurd world of breakfast food wars and living mascots.
Unfrosted will be available for fans to watch with a Pop-Tart and a glass of milk on May 3rd, 2024. With the success of Barbie, Hollywood may be entering an era where any brand can and will be turned into a movie. It will be interesting to see if Jerry Seinfeld and the rest of the cast can elevate the thin premise or if it will come across as branded schlock.
