If we told you that Jerry Seinfeld was making a movie about Pop-Tarts, you might not have believed us. Well, that is happening, and now the even crazier part about this film is the cast that has been attached. Although Seinfeld will be starring in the feature film, joining him is Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Tom Lennon, Adrian Martinez, and Christian Slater. This crazy cereal war of a film will be debuting on Netflix.
Jerry Seinfeld has had quite a good working relationship with Netflix. His show Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee was a huge hit for the platform. Now the man is moving on to star, co-write, and direct this new film which is aptly titled Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. Oddly enough, this film is going to be the directorial debut of the comedian. The film takes place in the 1960s in Michigan where famed cereal brands Kellog’s and Post are in a war to outdo one another. They have both claimed they plan to make the ultimate breakfast pastry that will change breakfast forever. Seinfeld is starring though his role has not been disclosed, as is the same for the rest of this high-profile cast that has been attached.
Oddly enough, the Pop-Tart movie was involved in a bidding competition last year, and it ended up being purchased by Netflix. As previously mentioned, Jerry Seinfeld has a good relationship with Netflix, specifically with the co-CEO and COO of the platform, Ted Sarandos. The deal might have landed with Netflix for that reason. The platform had inked a $100 million deal with Seinfeld in 2017, which brought over Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, his last two stand-up specials (Jerry Before Seinfeld and 23 Hours to Kill), and the rights to stream Seinfeld on the platform for the next five years. Seinfeld co-wrote the film with Spike Feresten, Andy Robin & Barry Marder. He will serve as a producer alongside Feresten and Beau Bauman. Cherylanne Martin, Andy Robin, and Barry Marder will be executive producers.
Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story is currently in the filming stages, so there is a good chance that the film will debut sometime in early 2023. If not the first quarter, we might see it sometime during the summer months. We honestly can’t wait to see how this story unfolds, and who Jerry Seinfeld portrays in the film. Well, we can’t wait to see who all these actors are portraying. This film sounds crazy enough to work. Netflix was crazy enough about it to enter into a bidding war for rights to the film.
Jerry Seinfeld hasn’t appeared in a full film role since Bee Movie came out in 2007. Now the comedian is taking the director’s chair for a film that he wrote and will star in. Those are some huge gains, and we can’t wait to see how it all works out. It might take some time, but be on the lookout to see the trailer for this wonderfully odd movie in the near future.
