One of the breakout film performances of 2020 came from Maria Bakalova. The actress had a prominent role alongside comic superstar Sacha Baron Cohen in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm and has now landed a new role in a film made by another legendary comic figure. Deadline reports that the Borat Subsequent Moviefilm star has been cast in Jerry Seinfeld’s movie, Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story.
Maria Bakalova joins a project that started life as a joke in one of Jerry Seinfeld’s recent comedy specials for Netflix. The pop-tart skit then mothballed into a major passion project for Seinfeld, the man behind one of the most iconic sitcoms of American television history. Netflix has taken on Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story which takes place in early sixties Michigan, charting the ferocious business rivalry between Cereal companies Kellog’s and Post as they race against each other to produce a cake that could redefine the American breakfast.
A crazy premise for a film and undoubtedly it will be a barrel of laughs given that Seinfeld’s wisdom is being applied not only to the script, but to directing, producing, and starring in the film as well. Maria Bakalova is said to be just featuring in the film in a minor cameo role, but the rising star is joined by an incredible ensemble cast, featuring some of the biggest names in American comedy and cinema. The cast includes; Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Tom Lennon, Adrian Martinez, and Christian Slater.
As well as being announced as a cast member in Jerry Seinfeld’s new movie, Maria Bakalova has also been cast in Andrew Durham’s Fairyland. The film is Durham’s feature directional debut and Sofia Coppola is attached to the film as a producer. The story is an adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s book, Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father. The book, originally published in 2012 is set in the cultural backdrop of San Francisco in the 70s and 80s, with the AIDS epidemic woven throughout the story. Alysia Abbot’s father Steve was a victim of the AIDS crisis and his life prior to succumbing to the horrific disease was spent both creatively, as a poet, and heroically, as a gay rights activist. Fairyland has wrapped production and Maria Bakalova’s undisclosed role sits amongst performances from co-stars including Emilia Jones, Scoot McNairy, Geena Davis, and Adam Lambert.
Maria Bakalova landing two roles in projects with iconic names such as Sofia Coppola and Jerry Seinfeld behind them is no fluke. The rising star burst onto the scene in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, playing Borat’s daughter Tutar Sagdiyev and her Oscar-nominated role will forever be remembered for that infamous interview with the disgraced former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Bakalova followed up her Oscar-nominated performance by appearing in the lead role for Vesela Kazakova & Mina Mileva’s drama Woman Do Cry, which was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival. As well as this, she will star in the upcoming A24 comedy-horror Bodies Bodies Bodies and will also be in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Cosmo the Spacedog in what are just a selection of the many future roles this talented young actress has earned off the back of her incredible performances.
